Can't you just flash?
Instead of software mod the 9500 NP to a 9700. Doesn't a BIOS flash work?
I dislike softmods or hardware mods. Incompatibility issues from the past pissed me off too much and I don't want the hassle with Linux.

not necessarily. the 9500np has to have the right hardware (memory I believe) and not all 9500np's are the same. In fact, ATI changed the way they made the 9500np's around January I think to stop this from happening. Theres a good thread or two around on it. I'll try and dig up a link for ya...

According your Shuki's first link
The NP can be modded to PRO status. Anyways, I think I'm going to purchase a 9500NP now.
