Need Some Advice

Hi all

Im looking to start building a new pc and need some advice on what to get. I'v been looking at the Intel Core 2 Due E6600. Is this any good for overclocking? Also what would be a good mobo to go for to go with this? Another question is does it matter what memory you have to overclock?

Most e6600s OC well and I would say right now it's the best "Hi End" bang for the buck...or a e6420, but in july I believe the quad cores will be in the mid $200 range(think I read that somewhere).

As for a motherboard it would depend on what you planed on doing(SLI/Crossfire...ect).

Yes ram does matter for OCing and you can get 2gig of DDR2 800 for around and under $100 and that would be good unless you want to try extreme OCing, then you'd want to go DDR 1000.

da e6600 is excellent for OC'in and it cost less than da e6400. it has higher range of multipler and l2 cach than the e6400. i used the asus p5b motherboard to go with my e6600 because it offer alot of options for OC'in and its under 200 CDN (it support 1666 FSB,800 DRR2 ram and quad core)

Sli and Cross-fire is just da name that Ati and Nvidia use when u have 2 video card on da same motherboard. u need a sli/cross-fire ready motherboard and compatible video card (usually 2 of da same video card) its suppose 2 provide more bandwidth and GPU power.

You're smoking something(or don't know what you're talking about) if you think the e6600 costs less than the e6420 and the e6420 does have a lower multi, but they both have the same amount of cache.

The Asus P5B is a pretty good one....most people get the P5B deluxe though. The Gigabyte DS3 r3.3 is good too if you're going to get the p965 chipset.

What differs between the P5b and the deluxe model? Its about £40 more thats all

when did i mention about the e6420 ? i know da e6420 has 4mb l2 cach and cost less than da e6600.

the deluxed just gives u more options and features not found on the lower end version.

If you plan on overclocking at all, your best bet is the P5B Deluxe....Will especially want that if you have a lower multi chip like a 6300/6400. But most definately recommend the 6600 with a p5b.

Considering by july 20th give or take (I heard 24th-25th more specifically) the 6600 should be like 100-150$. and quadcores in the 200 range.

First the e6600 does not cost less than the e6400, e6600 is a "Conroe" and e6400 is an "Allendale" the first having 4mb of L2, the 2nd having 2mb of L2....Multi on the e6400 is 8x. Where the e6600 is 9x the only problem your going to run into here is how high the FSB of the board and your ram is going to allow you to do (More on that if you need to know).... But the P965 chipset has been proven at 500-550 pretty easy, either way both chips are pretty nice.

2nd off could you refrain from using "da" instead of "the", it hardly sounds educated.

For the record... an E6300 will overclock farther than an E6600 as well as you getting a much higher delta in clock speeds from start to finish, and it will put out alot less heat being that it has far fewer transistors. Plus with a P965 based board (hear P35 isn't much for OCing but its early days yet), you can crank that FSB up and then end up outbenching a stock X6800 Core 2 Duo.

Can't beat that in my opinion for the current low price of the E6300.

Ummm...... Where have you seen that a e6300 will clock farther than a e6600? First off you would have to assume you have a board that can do 500mhz+ FSB because that e6300 is locked at 7x multi....2nd off you would have to assume you have a really bad e6600....I have owned over 7 e6600's and xeon 3060s all of which broke 3.6ghz with little or no effort at 400fsb, and had no problem going higher with a lower multi. The extra L2 cache on the e6600 pounds the allendales on anything they do, they will always be lower on benchmarks and performance because of that. Not every board can do 500+ FSB very easily, 90% of the P965s can, but you would be assuming that they are using that, even then I dont see anyone with e6300/6400s clocked 3.6-4ghz like most e6600 users have.

And P35 is the best clocker out to date, especially if you go with a highend Gigabyte or a P5K Deluxe or the DDR3 variants. And no E6300 is going to outbench a Conroe with 4mb of L2, 2mb just doesnt do anything for it in benches, and no 6300 is going to out clock a e6600/6700/6800 period, you better have a golden chip if you do, or the latter 3 are busted or the board itself isnt functioning properly.

Not to put down the E6300 its a good chip for the money, it just doesnt have the edge over the more expensive chips in the least.

I said an E6300 will overclock farther, meaning that the delta between start clock and final OC is greater. Assuming you get 3.6GHz (which is more average than 4GHz to be honest), that's a 1.2GHz delta. The average E6300 on stock voltage can do easily 3.0-3.2GHz (albeit with a high FSB). Assume 2.8GHz even, hell, which is a 400MHz FSB. That's a 1.74GHz delta, 540MHz more than the E6600 delta. Yes, you need a board that can do high FSB's but who the hell buys a board for overclocking that generally or is known to generally not to high FSB's? Doesn't make sense to me but hey.

Also... you've taken another part of the statement I made out of context. First, the extra 2MB cache isn't worth the increase in TDP in my opinion, heat will become a problem faster (that's just straight physics). It also doesn't make a giant difference in most benchmarks. It makes a difference, true, but a small one. I also said that an OC'ed E6300 will outbench a STOCK X6800. Usually I overclock a much cheaper chip to equal or surpass the more expensive ones. The 4MB cache means nothing when you're running a 1600MHz FSB and 1:1 DDR2-800, so it WILL outbench a stock X6800 (1066 bus with DDR2-800RAM).

I'm not saying the E6600 is a garbage overclocker. Certainly not. But without resorting to more expensive or grandoise air cooling, you can easily take an E6300 based P965 system, for very little money and effort (use stock cooling even) and make it perform just as well as some guy who buys an E6700-X6800 based system and leaves it stock.

That's more my point of view.

(Also... P35... like I said, I haven't heard much except from 1 - 2 people who didn't seem to think it was that great. When I read more about it I'll have a more educated view of things...its early days yet...)
