Arctic Silver Voids Warranty

Just saw this over at Hardocp today, and its very interesting reading. Id heard about this before. This came straight from AMD.

Artic Silver is made up of a matrix with conductive particles. There is the possibility of creating electrical shorts on the package. Any failed processor used w/ Artic Silver or any other thermal grease other than Shin Estu G 749 would be subject to warranty voiding.

WD40? Didn't it say somewhere in the AS3 instructions not to use WD40. I used 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean my processor...and it worked like a charm.

It did say in the AS3 instructions to use alcohol. It's the best because it evaporates so you can be sure nothing is left behind.

Are you talking about using it on the heatsink or the CPU itself? I wouldn't use it on the CPU, alcohol can erode plastics.

I use it on the core, and if some gets on the OPGA... 420... Nail polish remover evaporates d@mn fast also.

The entire area around the core.... The entire piece of "plastic" as you call it.

No, I didn't call it plastic. I said "alcohol can erode plastics". I assume a CPU is more delicate than plastic, so I wouldn't want to use it on my CPU.

This is what I was able to find

The new Athlon XP uses what AMD calls an organic pin grid array, which uses fiberglass, similar to that used on printed circuit boards. Using this packaging lowers impedance and costs less to manufacture. It is also noticably thinner and lighter than the ceramic used in the Thunderbird-based Athlons.

So I shouldn't try and burn my processor out, spread some jam on it and give it a bite?

There are many things that qualify as "organic" that I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole

well alcohol still leaves a fine resadue we stoped useing it @ motorala to clean the conectors bocouse of that it was cosuing chargeing problems ........... eather way your sending it in for replacement .... not cleaning it off for reuse here so wd40 works best ... only time not use wd40 and use alcohol is if your working with a good cpu even then it still leave a poorly conductive material residue behind
