Overclocking an ATI Mobility X1800 In A Dell M2010

I need some help over clocking this ATI Mobility X1800. So if someone can help me out then that would be great.

Generally you dont want to overclock things in a notebook.I can help you if you really want, but thermals become much more of an issue than in desktops.

What you have to realize is that the M2010 is not really so much of a laptop as it is a very compact all inclusive desktop. The chassis has lots of room and good heat sinks with auto-on fans on both processor and video (which are separated to either side of the motherboard). I have overclocked the video to 550mhz core and 650mhz for the memory. ATITool works great for that and it allows you to test the limits of GPU and memory. Mines tarted spazing out at about 580mhz and the video went to about 690mhz

I have repaired a few 2010's and while they are great machines, they do run hot.

The inherant design of the 2010 gives little room for heat to disperse and when it rises, it basically folds back on itself horizontally and lowers down over the mobo and components. I have frequently seen CPUs in those machines (2.33ghz Core2s) running at 80c under load (test yourself with everest - although there will be a 8% +/- variance compared to a diode reading). The graphics card, ive tested with diodes, and they can hit 90c at stock speeds.

I do not suggest you touch it for overclocking, even though there was a beta configuration file for a clocking utility which let you overclock the CPU by 5%.

Anything in a confined enclosure, especially designed to operating horizontally will get hot, regardless.

ATI tool will work to overclock the X1800, however even though it might work you will be shortening the lifespan. I also doubt you will see more than 1fps-3fps in most modern games with a reasonable overclock.

Would you consider sharing the information on overclocking the CPU? I'm willing to take the risk - as I said, I ran the video card and video memory clocked up by 20% and I did see an improvement in BF2. I'm also curious how Dell managed to overclock the M1710 with the T7600R processor - I've seen the dial in the BIOS and it shows that you can clock it up to 3ghz!
