That Black Icky Thing..

That black icky "Thermal Grease" I think on the bottom of P4 Heatsinks hinders performance. Well at least for me. After I removed it from my P4 1.7 Ghz and my P4 2.4 GHz, the core temps dropped a few degrees. I just thought I'd share.

Nothing.

Just the silver coloured "padding" left.

But thats if you cleaned it down to the Aluminum or copper that the heatsink is made from, OEM heatsinks usually have thermal pads that don't work as as good thermal grease

I cleaned it all very well..

I'm satisified with it as long as temps are lower.

You really need to put some thermal compound on it. You can and probably will damage your CPU if you don't.

Yeah I usually clean it off and put some AS2 on whenever they need me to fix something in there computer, just to keep it from causing other problems, and none of them have complained yet

How will it be damaged?

Just curious as to how it will be damaged. BTW, it's not BARE heatsink which the CPU is touching. There is actually some silver layer of padding (if you will).

Air-gaps.

Air gaps will cause certain areas on your CPU to not cool properly, which CAN damage your CPU over time.

Damn those Air Gaps!

*Shakes a fist* I guess I'll pick up a tube of AS2 for $10 CDN when I get my new monitor.

Man, get some of that cheap white goop before you use AS2!!!

ANY heatsink goop that conducts electricity is just a BAD way to go, period. Get arctic alumina if you need to use brandname stuff, or Nanotherm Blue II or something. (I'm using the Nanotherm Blue II right now and like it a lot, it spreads well without being all goopy. )

Where to find this white goop? Please not internet sites. I don't buy online, unfortunately. Did you know that Northwood core's max VCore is 1.75 volts? That explains the sudden death syndrome with Northwoods. It's actually in the specifications for Northwood processors. But for Willamette cores it's a whopping 2.1 V.

EDIT: I just read JavaFox's old post about Sudden Death Northwoods. The person "apparently" was running at 1.65 V, but I'm guessing the ACTUAL voltage was considerably higher. My guess would be it was touching 1.75 V or surpassing it.

White goop.

I picked it up at me local Radio Shack for about $2.99us for a toothpaste sized tube. (Pretty much a lifetime supply.)
