newbie Overclocking question

I have an Athlon XP Barton 333Mhz FSB with DDR400 RAM.

I think I'd get a decent boost if I increased the FSB to 200Mhz to sync with the DDR400 RAM. How safe is this for the processor? Is it likely to have a shorter life or can it cope?

Well, I have always been told for every 10 degrees Celcius the temperature goes up, the lifespan of the chip is halved. That said, those chips last for years. Just make sure you have adequate cooling. O/cing it may shorten its life, but not by enough to matter so long as you cool it correctly. If the CPU is unstable at 200MHz, give it a little more voltage.

make sure it's not stock cooling...and then boost up the memory, ddr voltage, fsb, and cpu voltage...do it slowly to see when it's stable enough to run...also run some test to see if it's stable.

If you can do it sure, but do you have the right board and the right cooling?

when you put your fsb up do it 10 at a time... just raise your DDR voltage to 2.7... if its already there then leave it, it should be fine. When your cpu becomes unstable then raise it .1 volts at first (I.E. if the stock voltage is 1.65 and the cpu is unstable then raise it to 1.75...) but you hopefully wont have to raise it past 1.8, but if you do i wouldnt go higher than 1.85 unless you have some great cooling.also, of course, dont do any overclocking unless you have great cooling. By that i mean you cpu full load is no higher that about 40 - 45 C... and get some arctic silver 3... why dont you tell us your processor and your heatsink/fan...

Processor is AthlonXP 2800+ and its just the fan that came with it. If the RAM is meant to run at 200 DDR then surely I don't need to increase its voltage?

No, you shouldn't have to increase the RAM voltage, but you might have to increase the CPU voltage. Also, you may find that while your RAM can run at 400MHz just fine, it may not be able to run at 400MHz with aggressive, high-performance settings enabled. Once you have sucessfully overclocked your processor to where you want it to be, look into optimizing your RAM settings.
