Your favorite CPU (Air) Cooler for overclocking?

especially when clocking your Core 2 Duo/Quad class processors on air cooler.

i'm still looking for my favorite one, if you already have one, what is it?

i myself just got a couple more coolers to try.

The Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, I used it on the AMD processors and now on the E6600. Does the job very well, and doesn't cost a mortgage to get one. in combination with Arctic silver thermal paste

Freezer 7 Pro is what i have always used. Im not sure if i would want to use anything else, but im sure someday something better will catch my eye.

Thermalright Ultima-90i. Performance of it's bigger brother the 120 extreme without the extra size and weight.

Zigmatech HDT-1283 seems to be teh new hawtness right now. Although it has been a long while since I've used any aircooling on one of my systems.

i don't seem to find a dealer who's selling the Zigmatech HDT-1283, i guess that HDT name indicates that its base design would be similar to OCZ Vendetta 2.
i think the vendetta 2 is working quite well.

Currently got the TRUE, which cools brilliantly with the right fan. Also used a Cooler Mastedr Hyper TX2 which left me totally underwhelmed although it is better than the stock cooler. Got a Foxconn heatsink I'm using in an HTPC which works ok with my E2160.

I've also got a Thermalright SI-120 hiding in a cupboard somewhere which was great for s478

AFAIK Zigmatech produces the Vendetta 2 OCZ.

I've never seen Xigmatek spelled Zigmatek before now.

FrostyTech tests a lot of HSFs, so I would drop by there to see how the one you're looking at compares to others.

They also have a Top 5 leaderboard, and the current number 1 is the 'SunBeam Core Contact Freezer'.

i think i begin to like OCZ vendetta2 CPU cooler, only if it comes with a better mounting kit for LGA775.

it seems to me that HDT CPU coolers likes OCZ vendetta2, Xigmatek HDT's, Sunbeam Core contact freeze looks to have given a very good CPU cooling performance.

Yeah I would tend to agree there. try mounting two on one board however, they weigh a ton.....

I think these would be the best temps ive gotten on two moderately overclocked QX9775s (skulltrail) with air cooling (voltage is actually 1.3v and fans are noiseblocker 120mms - just one per unit).

Room ambient is around 25-26c

Get hold of the Ultima-90i even just for comparison. It's much lighter and more manageable. No issues with temps even a 3.4ghz.

Coretemp is currently showing 38C on core 1 with 35C on 2,3 and 4.

Used them before, they aren't as good as the one I just posted above... at default voltage and clocks the cpus idle at 2c above ambient. 90i is a good 5-9c more

i have no doubt at this time that TR True 120 really provides superior cooling performance for an overclocked processor.

however, if anyone happen to have an alternative to TR True 120 (being that you used to use and like this cooler before, but have found another one that is better), i still what to know.

you really can't beat thermalright for air coolers/heatsinks.

@ Zardon, im not sure how the hell that skulltrail motherboard is holding two of them on there mind you. Aren't those coolers like 790g WITHOUT a fan? thats like 1600gr on heatsinks alone, never mind the 3 280 GTXS!

Poor mobo is getting nailed with weight, but awesome temperatures, should prolong the CPU life hugely I would think. 29c, mad !

I'd still go by the Frostytech testing results. They have the Sunbeamtech Core Contact as the #1 HSF, the Xigmatech HDT-S1283 as #2, and the Ultra-120 coming in at #3.

i wouldnt go by those ratings alone especially since the TR Ultra Extreme is ranked LOWER than the regular Ultra 120....

either their cooler was defective or they have no idea how to apply thermal paste.....

would be nice if DH had a review of it though....

so Z how do the TRUE Blacks compare to the Corsair Nautilus's youve been using?

You're absolutely right. I can't go by one websites results alone.

So I got curious and looked up other sites results.
-Overclockers Club has the TRUE beating out the Core Contact Freezer, but no mention of the Xigmatek or regular Ultra 120.
-Bit-tech has the Core Contact Freezer and the TRUE neck-and-neck, but still no mention of the Xigmatek or regular Ultra 120.

Can't find anymore benchmarks between the two. It really would be nice if more sites reviewed cooling products and compared them. =/

Price
-Ultra-120 (non extreme): $60USD
-CCF: $40USD
-Xigmatek HDT-S1283: $35USD

I think any choice between the three would do fine job.

Thats quite bizarre, ive tested the xigmatech 1283's and they are 4c higher than the thermalright true blacks I posted above under load (2x9775's @ 1.4volt @ 4.2ghz). Both mounted with backplates and MX2 paste. To be fair however the Thermalright true blacks are very expensive in the UK, around £45 each. the 1283's are £30.

The Corsair Nautilus are pretty nifty little all in one units for convenience, the only issue with them is the rubbish mounting clip design, you really need to mod them out with better brackets as it can help by about 5-8c.

To be honest the Thermalright's I have discussed in this thread are the best coolers ive used outside high end watercooling and phase. They are absolutely huge however and put a strain on the motherboard, that said the mounting brackets are the best quality and the screws and fitting is almost perfect.

Even though they are massively expensive I would recommend them to people wanting to get good overclocks on air, nothing ive tested touches them.

I agree, we need to do more reviews on coolers, however it is getting the time, all our staff are maxed out right now.
