Review : Thermalright SLK-900 !
When I first opened the box of the Thermalright SLK-900 my thoughts were, you know the SLK-900 looks a lot like a slightly larger SLK-800 with a new mounting base. Only when I placed the SLK-900 side by side with the SLK-800 did some of the other differences come to light--the most obvious of these being that the SLK-900 has an extra set of steppings cut in the base to support 92mm fans without the need for an adapter. The SLK-800 also has 34 tightly fitted fins, while the SLK-900 has 33 fins, which are spaced slightly farther apart. The HSF orientation has also been changed from North-South to East-West. I would imagine this was done to prevent the necessity of a complete HSF redesign. Finally, weighing in at 570 grams to my knowledge the only heavier cooler than the SLK-900 is the Swiftech MCX462+.

best heatsink out there, just remember if anyone is interested to check whether your mobo can support it or not, because its a BRUTE.

ill actually give you guys some pretty impressive figures, some tests I tried.
I have a 2600XP, which normally hits around 2300-2350mhz at 1.8 core volt, temps around 37 c 40-41 full load. Trying a fairly risky experiment, in my eyes anyway. I raised the core voltage to 1.95 and benched pcmark2002 several times along with 3dmark2001se. raising the cpu to almost 2500mhz. Temps after the tests were........ 49c full load and idle it sits at around 43-44c I dont have a delta fan either ! |

) for about 2 months now, and I can "only" hit 2200 MHZ with this x1700+ JIUHB at 1.8V.Only problem is, this motherboard, a shuttle AK31 3.1 featuring a VIA Kt266a chipset, can only get the cpu ratio to a mere 13x. Unfortunately I realized that limitation after burning two of the 5 L3 bridges on my processor using a 1.5v battery, 2 wires and a couple of needles. My processor is running just fine at 1.9 atm and I'm terribly tempted to switch to a more-than-surprising Via Kt600. The other choice remain to acquire the highly praised nForce2 now that the 200Fsb is available through a simple bios update. But this update is certainly distant in the future as this student just got himself a job, and thus need to save some serious bucks :P Peace |

I'm running this cooler on my o'ced 2.53b @3.3GHz. and it is a top performer for sure. I've only used the stock Intel P4 cooler and this one, so granted, I don't have a lot to compare to, but with this kind of o'c the stock cooler was getting into the mid to high 50's. So the SLK900 took a solid 10-15 degrees off from what the Intel cooler was doing for me.
Idle is 38c, and load is 46c, with an 800 MHz overclock. Plus, I'm only running a low speed (and quiet) Panaflo 92mm. @ 2850 RPM, 56.8 CFM, and 35 dB. I could put a screamer on there but I like to keep the noise down. I don't need a "silent" system, just not something that's screaming all the time. With a higher output fan, I'm sure I could get several degrees cooler, but this one does the job well enough to keep temps in a comfortably low range and the noise at a tolerable level. I was a degree or two cooler a couple of months ago but as I looked down inside my case tonight, I'm seeing a pretty good buildup of dust...expecially on the heatsink fins. Time to take the whole case outside again and give it a blow out with my trusty compressed air tank. **Side note** The reason I looked for dust is my father-in-law called tonight and said he was blowing his case out with a can of compressed air and zapped the power supply dead. He did it with the system running!! I wish he would have called first, not after. I hope the PS didn't take anything else with it when it died.If you're going to blow your case/system free of dust, definitely do it with the system shut down. Dust ranks right up there as one of the top killers of computer components. |
