Lousy q6600?
Hi lemme just intro my specs before I get to the problem
Gigabyte EP45T-DS3R Q6600 Patriot Viper 4GB(2x2GB) Kit DDR3 1333MHz RAM I'm guessing the problem is coming from 1 of those 3 things. Now the problem, when I first got the setup the system boots and everything, however the Q6600 is running at a frequency of 266 and consequently that has caused the RAM to operate at 1066 MHz. I tried to change the frequency to 333 keeping the multiplier at 9 hoping for some overclock to 3GHz which I don't think is asking for a lot considering its a Q6600, however when I do this I have boot failure. So far the best settings I can manage it a frequency of 300 with a multiplier 8 (because 9 would cause boot failure) keeping my processor at 2.4GHz and my RAM slightly better at 1200 MHz I has people tell me its because the piece of q6600 that I got was lousy, so I jsut wanted to confirm with more people whether if there really is nothing I could do. If possible I would like to keep away from messing with cpu voltage |

Re: Lousy q6600?
when you don't want to increase cpu voltage there isn't really a lot you can do. you can try to overclock the memory by itself and try to run it with a divider.. but I have no experience with ddr3, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Lousy q6600?
okay yeah i get that not increasing voltage is a little funny. but its just that I can't seem to do the slightest bit of overclocking at stock voltage. 333x8 isn't working either and that's a pretty small increase from 2.4GHz. if this were any regular processor I wouldn't really mind, but this is the q6600 we're talking about, the one which was said to be able to do 3GHz no problem on stock, and now this chip comes along and can't even overclock to 2.66 without voltage increase, that's a little lousy wouldn't you say?
furthermore my q6600 was G0 revision which is supposedly better than its predecessor |

Re: Lousy q6600?
maybe you really hit a lousy cpu.
have you set the voltage on auto or manually on the stock voltage? is your memory getting enough voltage? It might help setting the voltages (cpu and memory) and timings of the memory manually instead of on auto. I really don't want to say too much about this subject as I don't know very much about the mechanics. I know how to overclock, but with questions like these I very quickly have no clue at all.. I think someone else has to answer that for you.

Re: Lousy q6600?
alright thanks for helping anyways, and to answer your questions,
all voltages are currently set at auto. this is not including the voltage for the RAM. Since these are performance RAMs I followed the specs laid out by Patriot which is 1.7 volts with 7-7-7-20 settings Edit: tried to run the thing at 300x9 at stock cooler and stock voltage, 15 minutes in temps came up to around 65, comments please. Re: Lousy q6600?
Only other things I would suggest...
Look at other settings, and as Neshi stated, set the voltages and other settings manually. My old 680i SLI mainboard, with Auto set voltages, would leave my Q6600 @ 1.46v, and heavily overvolt the northbridge and RAM. Also, disable the "CPU Extras" like Speedstep, thermal throttling, vanderpool technology etc. More specifically, disable "Disable Execute Bit." Most Q6600's have pretty big issues with it, when overclocking. Temp wise, the only thing I can suggest is to be sure the heatsink is seated properly, fan is at full speed, turn off any kind of thermal throttling, etc. I have zero experience with a Q6600 on the stock HSF, so I have no idea what normal temperatures are like. It's possible you just got a dumpy Q6600, but I'd check the other settings before presuming such. Last edited by Kazeko; Jan 20, 2009 at 04:44 PM. |

Re: Lousy q6600?
Check with CPU-Z to see what the VID of the chip is at stock speeds, i.e Everything default. You can safely go fairly high on the voltage with these chips but generally not with a stock cooler.
Try setting VTT to 1.3Volts and set 1.35Volts on the CPU itself, this should be within the realms of possibility for the stock cooler to handle. Mike |
