Problems overclocking Phenom 9850BE
I'm having some problems with overclocking my Phenom.
It easily overclocks from 2.5 to 3.2 GHz by just raising the multiplier and voltage and I can get it stable. However, I'd like to OC with raising HT Ref as well. The downside with just using multiplier is that I can't get the NB Freq or HT Link to increase, not if I'm using AOD. They will follow if I raise HT Ref but not if I raise multiplier. Thing is, as soon as I go above 215 with HT Ref my computer just reboots during a stress test. No BSOD or lockup, it plainly reboots. I've adjusted voltages for both CPU, NB and HT but no difference. I really don't know what to do or if I just have to accept that my CPU doesn't like increasing HT Ref. Sure, I could do everything in BIOS and raise all multipliers there but I prefer to use AOD because I don't want to run my system overclocked 24/7. I don't need it to be. It's so easy to just start AOD and set the higher clocks for those times when I need it instead. Otherwise I'd have to reboot everytime I want to make a change and that's just to time consuming. |

Re: Problems overclocking Phenom 9850BE
I haven't even laid my hands on a Phenom system but if it's not too much different from my old X2 one should avoid overclocking the hypertransport link. At the time I was overclocking that system there was no gain from overclocking hypertransport and it fairly quickly became unstable if one did. The hypertransport bus also had way more bandwidth than was needed, so it could in fact be underclocked quite a bit with no practical performance loss. Perhaps that is still the case.

Re: Problems overclocking Phenom 9850BE
Maybe. I didn't notice that much lower performance when I was temporarily using the Asrock NF3 motherboard that only had HT on 800 instead of the 2000 I have with this.
I can lower the HT multi in AOD so maybe I should try and lower that as I raise HT Ref and see if the sudden reboot goes away? |

Re: Problems overclocking Phenom 9850BE
Hi,
Phenoms are notorious for their dislike of modified HT links, hence the BE editions. The new AMD SB750 chip has alleviated this problem somewhat, certainly with Deneb anyway. I like to use 210HT to give a slight boost to 880Mhz for PC6400 and then run with the multiplier from there. Always best to use the BIOS for this as well. Most of these top at ~3.0GHz without a SB750 equipped motherboard. Won't need more than 1.425Volts for that usually. Mike |

Re: Problems overclocking Phenom 9850BE
I've just decided to leave it as it is with memory set to 1066 in BIOS and just OC with multiplier. Tried to lower HT Link and it didn't really help. I just have to accept that my Phenom doesn't like to be OC'd with HT Ref at all.
I run it perfectly stable at 3.1 GHz with 1.425V and I can get it to run at 3.2 with 1.45V if I don't stress the cores fully, with prime95 one core fails after a few minutes. Don't like to go higher with voltage since it's running hot enough as it is already. Though, if I set three cores at 3.2 and the last core at 3.1 I can run it for hours.. should play around a bit more with ACC but I can't really find any info on what it does and how it works so I have no idea what I'm doing really. |
