Complete Noob at OCing. Need help before I blow things up!!!

well its not That bad, but I needed attention

I have C2D 2.66 and a Asus P5K-e P35 chipset board. I wish to OC this to about 3.2 and to do this iam gonna get some Kingston HyperX 1066 ddr2 RAM at 5 5 5 15 running at 2.2v

Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

now to OC iam gonna ramp it down 800Mhz and then OC from there by gradually increasing the FSB till my CPU is at 3.2Ghz. Is this the right thing to do, or is there a better way???

Most important question is since this RAM runs at 1066 at 2.2v out of the box, when I lower the frequency to 800 will I have to lower the voltage to 1.8v in order to prevent burning or other permanent damage or can I leave it at 2.2v.

any help would be highly appreciated.

Re: Complete Noob at OCing. Need help before I blow things up!!!

basically, you just want to ramp up your FSB settings in the BIOS, just find the settings for that and go up from 333 to 400

then you adjust your FSB to memory ratio to allow for 800mhz memory 1:1 ratio

to get to the OC settings in the BIOS you may need to set the settings to manual

since you are getting DDR2 1066 and just running at 800mhz id just get some low latency DDR2 800... its better and i used the sticks shown, very good. they actually ran at 4-4-3-15 on a non EPP board

Newegg.com - OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Enhanced Bandwidth Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

also one last thing, disable Intel Speedstep and in the BIOS

disabling speedstep is that crucial? without that the OC won't take hold?

it makes overclocking a bit easier, after you are sure the system is completely stable and doesn't run too hot, it can be turned back on.

speedstep basically underclocks the system by lowering the multiplier when your system doesn't need all the available power, for example when you're doing office work. When you're doing cpu intensive stuff, it will automaticaly put the multiplayer at the chosen setting to meet the performance needed.

speedstep helps cutting down on heat and power drawn.

one thing to know is that speedstep doesnt run properly on an overclocked system, it results in strange lag and sluggish desktop performance.

really? I thought you could set it back once the overclock was stable and it would be ok.
good to know though.
