OC but programs all read differently....

I've got a 9850 Be Phenom on a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 Motherboard. I've got a couple of things going on with it that I can't get a clear answer on what it's actually running at. The MB CPU default ratio is 12.5. Officially, the memory is default to DDRII at 800 but the Kingston ram I bought is DDRII 8500 (1600 effectively). Mother board has the option to set it at 1600 and I did (supposed to be able to run it at that speed).

CPU issue: I ran AMD's OverDrive util and was able to have that run at 14x stable for over 24 hours with a clock speed of 2.9 up from the original 2.5 however, when I set that ratio in the bios it locks up after the desktop is loaded. I realize a hardware based OC is preferable and want to stick with that route. Jumping the modifier up to 13.5 will launch and run most things however launching PCWizard or CPU-Z, the programs time out with a Windows error. Running at 13x the programs all launch however PCWizard and CPU-Z all say that it's running at 12.5x even though the bios says that it's at 13x but SiSoft see's it at 13x . So I'm wondering what it's actually running at.

Memory issue: basically I'm getting the same thing with the memory. Bios says it's running at DDRII 8500 (1600 speed) however the above programs are all saying that it's running as pc2-6400u DDR2-400.

Am I just reading these things wrong, or are the programs picking up what they "should be running at" or is the bios not responding to what changes I make? I generally have not had an issue with OC my older pc's but fairly new to the quad core scene and things are a little different.

Video issue: My video cards seem to be OC fine with all the tools reading the same. I'm able to run one card at 875 core with 1377 ram and the other (although not nearly as good) at 830 with 1187. Running 2 Sapphire Toxic-X x3870 cards. However, I'm getting different reads on what the PCI-e slot is actually running at. I'm getting reads of both at 8x, both at 16x (which is what Gigabyte claims to run at) and SiSoft is saying one card at 16x and the other at 8x which I thought it was either one or the other, not both.

So I have no clue what any of this is actually running at as it's all being read as different specs. I've got multiple programs/tools all telling me different things and I'm not sure what is what or if the MB is even making the changes with what I'm putting in there.

Any help or explanations on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, running a CoolMax 950 Watt Modular PSU if that was a question.

If anyone has a question on anything specific that I might be running, please let me know as I'd love to get a straight answer on some of this.

Jand.

Re: OC but programs all read differently....

You had the lockups because of the voltages. Your programs read differently because they are old. DDR2 PC8500 is 667MHz.

Re: OC but programs all read differently....

You remember to save changes after you exit BIOS? simple error but it happens to the best.

What version of the programs are you running? make sure they're the latest, otherwise they might not have support for your cpu.

How many sticks of RAM do you have installed?

Did you DIY your computer? check the cards are in the correct PCI-E slots. You could also try running a benchmark disabling one card then swap. Results should be similar. For now i would roll everything back to stock speeds..

I completely missed this thread for some reason

On stats like that I usually check with CPUID either within CPU-Z or preferably Everest.

DDR2 PC6400 is 800mhz (400mhz double rate)

DDR2 PC8500 is 1066mhz (533mhz double rate)

There is likely a good reason why the system won't post at 1600mhz cause the chips weren't designed for it. Try 1066mhz instead
