My first AMD system in 7 years !!

This is a replacement for my 478 Celeron system I have been using as my backup machine so expect no high performance build here lol.

As I mentioned in another thread I wasn't able to use the Athlon 64 X2 7750 B.E. because this mobo won't support AM2+. I am going with the Athlon 64 X2 5200+ and for this build it is my only real cost. The mobo was sent to me by my buddy Frank to use for reviews, the case and CPU cooler are samples and the RAM, PSU and viddy card I have had for a while now.

I may pick up another mobo and drop a Phenom2 on it down the road we will see. I am doing some Vdimm mods to the mobo on this as well the original owner had issues with Vdimm Vdroop. I think the real focus on this build are the case mods including the utilization of an airflow change with the Hyper212 cooler to cool the bottom area of the case better. Which I will test tomorrow

System for now:

Athlon 64 X2 5200+
Cooler Master Hyper212 w/ 2x120mm fans
MSI K9N SLI
4G OCZ ReaperX HPC PC8000
Corsair HX-520
Gainward Bliss 9600GT w/ Accelero S1 and turbo kit
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160G IDE
Samsung DVD burner

NZXT Zero2 case
- 2 x 120mm Arctic Cooling rear fans (Exhaust)
- 4 x 120mm NZXT side fans (Intake)
- 1 x 120mm NZXT front fan (Intake)
- 2 x 80mm NZXT fans .. top(Exhaust) .. bottom(Intake)

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

Nice. Me getting this Core 2 Duo last summer was the first Intel system in about eight years, so I know the switching feeling. The brand new Phenom 2's seems really nice and should get very affordable a little later this year. I'm glad to see you already have a quality powersupply that will go very far.

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

Thanks and on changing I hear ya the last AMD system I ran was using a Rage 128 video card lol

The Phenom 2's look really good actually as well as the i7 from Intel. On the PSU had this a while I also have an NZXT PP-800 in the main machine. Two things I don't sacrifice due to cost is RAM and PSU

Cool DJ and any feedback you guys can give me on this would be helpful. I have a sh*tload of cooling in this case and can always throw the Domino A.L.C. on it if need be

AMD Noob here right now lol

OK picked up the new CPU after work and up and running here

Installing Vista X64 tonight and then hopefully will be able to play with it a bit tomorrow night. On the install and those with AM2 sockets I was quite impressed with the Hyper212 in this application. MUCH better than the LGA775 install

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

All good so far man thanks I still have some drivers and stuff as well as the side panel with the other 4 intake fans to install.

I ran this all day while I was at work with the side panel off and not sure on the core temps. I am checking for further chipset drivers, etc but I do know the mobo has been flashed to the newest BIOS version

Anyway will snap a few pics for you guys before I put the side panel on and here are the temps after 10 hours idle reported by OCCT 3.0.0.1 and CPUID HWmonitor. (Stock speeds)

Well checked with the previous owner of this mobo and his cpu temps showed properly with his 4800+ ... BIOS shows system @ 22C and CPU @ 4C this morning with the side over on. Sounds too low here *shrugs*

I did turn the Hyper212 cooler as mentioned to help draw air from the bottom of the case. Anyway all together now time to play

cingrats Mac Daddy ... really love the case and the cooling you have installed in it... looks like it's gonna be freezing inside...

i feel kinda ashamed to show my case... it's nowhere near as good as some cases i've seen here on dh... but hey... so far, it's done it's job...

hope this rig serves you for a long time...

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

I am hoping it does serve me a long time thanks Bro and that's why I am taking time and care with the cooling.

Googling around I came across a thread on DH lol ... a couple of the regulars having issues with O/Cing this CPU.
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/overcloc...ock-issue.html

I feel it is the Mobo not the CPU that is the issue I only run into problems running the RAM at 2.1V or more and forcing RAM to 800 Mhz. The mod is going to be needed especially in the case of the MSI board. I will have time to do that this weekend and play a bit more I am not expecting this to be a high performance machine but I want is as fast as possible and stable.

Nice system, but yeah those temps seem really low....... what's the room temp?

Or is 4c a typo? 4c is damn cold.....

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

Generally with AMD systems I stay away from nVidia chipsets as they just aren't as good as the AMD equivalents. That said, most AMD chips are good for 3.3GHz considering the right cooling etc. 5200+ chips should reach that goal fairly easily with the cooling you have.

240*13 for 3.12GHz would be fairly easy clock I would imagine. You'll likely need a slight HT voltage boost and maybe vCore, although some will do around the 3.1GHz on stock voltages.

The mobo was a freebee Mike from my buddy who was upgrading to a Phenom II system although on NV chipset I agree.

Thanks for the tips most appreciated I can actually run 3.04G with stock voltages and still have to find some time to tweak more .. maybe this weekend

Nope no typo 3 software programs and the BIOS report temps that low. The room temp is around 68F(20C) I thought at first I was missing a chipset driver or something they seem way too low. The two large Arctic Cooling rear fans are running at 100 percent though as they are quiet ... they actually move pages on a calendar on the wall about 3 feet away lol.

(I still think something is wacky with the temps though)

Gotta be something wacky there...... blowing 20c air at something can't make it 4c..... unless you've figured out a different form of physics.

My thoughts as well all I know is this mobo worked fine with a 4800+ on temps.

On blowing 20c air at something and physics well we also have vacuum to take into account or designs like the chambered case would never work. There are 8 120mm fans intake and exhaust within 8 inches of the CPU cooler (including the 2 on it). If I touch the grilles on either of the two rear Arctic Cooling fans they are ice cold *shrugs*

Tyrsonswood I am wondering maybe if I am going below the lower threshold of the temperature sensors and messing them up? I know they are cooler than the room but not 4C.

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

4c would be hard to reach without refrigerant of some sort. I have never worked with newer boards but some boards read different with a different CPU. But the 4c reading is coming from the CPU itself, AMD has them built in, so it's probably something inherient to that particular CPU....... either nothing knows what to do with the sensor data or a fault in the sensor.

Do you have access to a temp probe you could check that with?

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

No on the temperature probe I wish I did ... that's in the to do list for reviews. See if sensors in the CPU are failing that means 3 of them are. If you look further up in the thread there are temps for each core and well as Tcase. They are all too low ... I can see maybe 15C with the cooling I have but not 4C.

That's why I looked for chipset updates thinking perhaps that the temperatures were being interpreted incorrectly.

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

An update on this and posted back here instead of starting a new thread on mobo's, etc. The first question usually asked is .. What are your system specs? ... so thought it made more sense to post back here where all the info is.

On the temp issues I flashed the BIOS to version 3.10 and all the temps for the CPU are still wacked

I don't want to go into great detail on what a PITA it was to flash the BIOS on this MSI mobo but quite frankly if the newer ones aren't any better I will never use another MSI mobo.

I am happily running 3.1G on the 5200+ and sure I can go further the issue is I have no idea what my CPU temps really are. Any suggestions perhaps rolling back to an older BIOS version?

TIA

Re: My first AMD system in 7 years !!

Well still rolling along here and can triangulate my CPU temps using 3 programs so we are good

One thing I have come to find is the AMD platform handling the memory directly from the CPU is much more efficient than my Intel system. This same RAM rated @ 1000Mhz was O/Ced to 1100Mhz on my Intel rig with read/write on Everest 5 of 8600MBps @ 59ns latency.

Still working on this

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/overcloc...ock-issue.html

I feel it is the Mobo not the CPU that is the issue I only run into problems running the RAM at 2.1V or more and forcing RAM to 800 Mhz. The mod is going to be needed especially in the case of the MSI board. I will have time to do that this weekend and play a bit more I am not expecting this to be a high performance machine but I want is as fast as possible and stable.
I never had a problem with getting my 5200+ up to 2.9 but it never would go to 3.0Ghz at least not stable it always sat at 2.989Ghz ROFL
