Hey fellow DHers!

After a busy weekend I took the opportunity to take a look at a package that arrived for me..... the AMD Dragon Kit! I saw Judas started a thread so I thought I'd start my own so I don't crowd up his with my random wafflings and pictures on the build.

First and foremost, thanks DH and AMD for the most welcome surprise! Lovely bit of kit here!

I've attached a few pictures for everyone to see and I'm just sorting out the rest of the components at the moment. I'll post another update shortly.

There's a 4870X2, M4a79 Deluxe and a Phenom II X4 940

I was going to ask on the thread Judas started but forgot .... is the cooler on the 4870x2 based on the Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme?

I don't think so, it has triple fans but the heatsink underneath looks a lot different so I'm not 100% sure how closely related they are.

that makes 3 so far...

the hd4870x2 with the 3 fans has an aluminum heatsink for each gpu... they are not "together" as one peice from what i could tell (haven't really looked at it good).... would be nice if they were copper though.

Another interesting thing is that there is only ONE crossfire interconnector on these cards.... which would seem that they only intended this card to be crossfired with another hd4870x2 only.... not 3 or more.

I'm very tempted to get an addtional 2 HD4870x2's just to see if i can make triple crossfire work with 3 x2's (officially not supported... but would be interesting)

by buying a HD4870x2 with 2 interconnectors..... connect the current one to the hd4870x2 with 2 of them.. and then that one to another one

I think he means two connected twice?

If not, you can only use 4 ATI GPUs in Crossfire, so a triple 4870X2 setup will almost certainly fail unless you're wanting two seperate outputs.

great bizznass alex, that's sure to be a great performer with just the single x2. buddy of mine picked up a 940, 4870 1GB, and 4 gig OCZ DDR2 1066, with a foxconn board right after the first lil price drop on the new phenoms. it plays gta4 great at 1680x1050, smooth as butter wit the details up there. easy 3.6 oc too, after we figured out the madness of the foxconn bios, im sure the asus bios will be a lil nicer.

It's a bit of an overkill I think. Judas, you should buy one of Zardon's skulltrail system's Thermalright True Black heatsinks.

the heatsink is excellent performer for both silent and super high overclocking.. (apparently in all the reviews, the higher the overclock.. the more efficiently and cooler the heatsink is able to manage)

my cost on one is about $160

Coolermaster V10! Ugly, but huge and thus cool. Get one so that you can use it as a club when you don't need it as a cooler.

Does the V10 also come with motherboard reinforcements like huge metal supports to keep the mobo from snapping in half? Great kit dude enjoy!!! It only makes me wish I had the dough for a 4870X2.

I'm pretty sure that there are not any with 2 connectors, cant remember seeing any thats for sure. But even if there was such a beast, the driver support in consumer ati drivers stops at 4gpus... and even then the 4th isnt used often so it would be a pointless purchase at the moment.
