Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
Hey guys! Does anyone know much about this card? I need help Ocing it. I don't even know the basics? I've heard of RivaTuner. Is that the recommended platform now?

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
Rivatuner works well been using it for years. On this card I haven't used one so not really familiar with the clocks, etc.
Generally you leave the GPU and shader clocks linked as they are both relient on the GPU itself. Adjust the GPU clock first watching for artifacts and monitoring temps. When you start to see artifacts or instability back your clock off about 5 percent from the last value. Then adjust your mem clock watching for the same things. (Sorry quick reply gotta leave for work in 15 minutes lol)

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
use Ati Tool or something similar to test for artifacts.

Cool. I just tried out RivaTuner though and seem happy with that for now. I was able to get an extra 500 for my results for 3DMark Vantage. I ran Furmark and temps were up to 60c+. I clocked the Core up from 738MHz to 782 and the RAM from 1100MHz to 1172.

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
ATI tool is just a general overclocking tool and is not card specific, but I have had issues using it with 9 series cards.
I reccomend using any (demanding and not CPU limited) 3d stress test at all to check for artifacts, but obviously watching 3d mark is going to take a lot longer than quickly checking a purpose designed GPU stablity test program. 782mhz is not a bad overclock, but I have found that after pushing as far as possible linked there is often more performance to be gained by unlinking and pushing the shader a bit further, still checking for stability and temperatures of course. And BTW, your system specs claim a 5.5GHZ e7 - really?

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
Good advise blibbax and I was going to point out removing the GPU/shader clock link after Frankie got a taste for viddy O/Cing for the first time. A bit more performance can he obtained by raising the shader clock alone the max on my 9600gt is 780/2000/1050.
But I have found it is best to find the max GPU and memory clocks while linked then tweaking the shader ... otherwise you are playing with 3 parameters

Impressive either way, but if it isn't CPU-Z validated, it isn't an overclock :P

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
It booted up at 6.25GHz, but Windows underclocked it to 3.86. I figured it had something to do with an inbuilt temperature threshold or perhaps Windows will not run in at more than 4GHz at 32bit which is the highest speed I have tested.

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
32 bit or Windows itself will do nothing to your clock speed, limiting, reducing or otherwise.
It is possible that your motherboard intelligently clocked it back for your own safety, but more likely that it wasn't really at 6.25ghz in the first place. Most CPUs will fail to post at that speed even in an ultra high end motherboard under liquid nitrogen cooling.

Re: Nvidia 9800 GTX Overclock
It definitely posted at 6.25. I remember it. I'm sticking with the threshold deal.

I agree with you and blibbax on threshold.

I just installed Windows 7 on some new parts - MB, RAM, HDD. I am looking forward to seeing some new test results!

I haven't heard of coolbits. I've been using RivaTuner so far it's done really well for me.

Here are my latest benchmark results at all stock clocks. Notice that on my new system the results were comparable to my last system overclocked!
