Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
Okay............ This thing is seriously LOUD.........
![]() Mitsubishi M-A4200 Stereo Power Amp, $10.00 at Goodwill. ![]() And yes, before anybody complains, it is connected to a computer, I've got a new amp for the basement recording room............... Too damn loud for upstairs. Beyond loud the clarity is just sweet. Audigy Platinum output through my Alesis Mixer straight into 100watts per channel. It's a straight up power amp, doesn't even have a volume control. For speakers I've been running a reloaded and modified pair of Optimus 1000..... 15"woofers, 6" Mids, and Peavey horns (Motorola)Cosmeticly.... I really don't care, it's scratched up quite a bit. Functionally 100% 100 clean watts per side I'm diggin it!

Nice
![]() I found an old pic of the volt mod on the Cele rig I decided to do this on the mobo as opposed to the CPU itself. Sorry for the blurry pic but this gave me 1.65V. And a southbridge cooler

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
I'm working at a flatscreen 17" CRT right now.... Goodwill find for $4.99..... Brilliant picture and I doubt it was used at all before I got it, sure looked new anyways. I love CRT except when recording guitar.... they make one hell of a racket through the pickups, so I use both types.

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
There's always one spot in the room, IF you face a certain direction (this direction varies) where it's perfectly silent......... but thats nowhere near where you need to be.
![]() The CRT noise shouldn't effect the processor unless it's not in a metal casing. Mine tend to be in the rack except for my RP20 which is a floor unit. The noise is coming through the pickups for the most part.

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
See I can't do the CRT's. I probably used ten different ones for my rig through the years and they end up giving me splitting headaches before im done with a days worth of gaming. So I just stick with all LCDs. They even got me a set of 2 19" Samsungs for work (oh how nice they are in the government
) since I couldn't handle the set of 17" Dell CRTs that I was working with

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
Some people do get headaches from CRT's, I don't but I'm also not looking at moving graphics, ie games, or staring at "spreadsheets" all day. I've a habit of looking away from the screen quite a bit and re focusing my eyes on something else in the room.... that helps a lot.
As I've said, I have a mix here of LCD and CRT.... my bottom line is working and cheap (or free) because most of my systems have dual monitors...... More CRT's fit those two criteria. Typically if an LCD is cheap or free, it ain't working.

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
Yeah, that tends to help me. But sometimes I just get focussed into something and then end up with problems. Its a lot better if I have CRTs with a higher refresh rate (somewhere around 75Hz) since on most 60Hz (depending on the resolution) I can see the flicker and that, I think, is what causes my problem.

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
Honestly, I don't think it's the refresh so that gives most folks headaches - I think it's a slight out of focus condition - really hard to get perfect and always has been - and it drifts depending on so many things... Anyhow...

Re: The Old Junk for recording rig thread !!
I have a short story about old" recording "junk". My current system which is powered by now "old junk" Core 2 Duo E 7300. I installed a Creative X-Fi soundcard a short while ago and something happened that has never happened in the life of me ever having or building computers. As I was looking at the fancy heatsink on the X-Fi chip I decided to touch it with my free hand just to get a sense of the X-Fidelity on my hands, anyway I noticed a small spark discharge from my main finger onto the heatsink itself. I completely shit myself because after all the constant warnings that I've had for the last 15 years about wearing gloves and touching the inside of the case it had just happened to me. I decided to install the card anyway to see if it worked and with a little hope and prayer. The drivers installed and it sounded great, UNTIL, I had to do a reinstallation of Windows. After running setup I tried installing the soundcard drivers and upon detection of the soundcard I received a no soundcard present error. I thought I can't take it back because it's completely my fault it didn't work so I chucked it into the bottom of my bin and thought about how nice it sounded over and over again until my binned got emptied about a week later. Anyway I never got any recording done on that soundcard at all so I am unsure of the relevance to this thread, but I have done recording on this system before. I've used it to create a loop of the heavy guitar warmup part from Metallica's Enter Sandman which I still really love. It repeats itself for about 8 mins and is sure to send anyone jumping from my car at high speed if listened to for the entire 8 minutes, but I love it. I also used to record a lot of guitar work on my computer, but none of it has stuck around over the years. I kind of recycled it to inspire me to keep writing more. ANd never has a day gone past where my musical creativity has ever made me bored. PERIOD.
