Smilie Core i7 overclocked

Well, I finally found a stable clock for my Core i7 920. I'm running on air or I'd try to push it a little higher. I'm sure others have blown way past what I have but I don't guess it's too shabby for running on air with my fans @ 20%.

Re: Core i7 overclocked

should easily be able to hit 3.8 with turbo off.
will need to up voltage for cpu and qpi. that's assuming you have custom air, if stock then leave it at what it is now.

I'm on a stock cooler for the Dell XPS. It's a copper core, if that matters. How much would my temps drop if I were to have my cpu lapped?

Re: Core i7 overclocked

You should pick up a good aftermarket cooler before you consider lapping the CPU.

Lapping will void the system/CPU warranty and at best might gain you a 5C difference... most likely less since you are using just the stock Intel cooler.

True.

You can get a simple cooler for like 30 dollars. That isn't much and you still have warranty.

He isn't using a stock intel HSF. He is using the stock Dell XPS HSF, which isn't too bad IIRC.

Re: Core i7 overclocked

Increase those fans, especially if you mess with the voltage. Extra voltage = extra heat so I'd run it at 100% and back it down while under full load until your temperatures start to rise too much. I'd say 10-15 degrees under Intel's maximum temperature would be a good cut off point.

I think it'll come down to a balance between temperatures and noise.

Re: Core i7 overclocked

Lapping generally gets me about 5C max out of my setup. This, of course, is with both the processor and the water blocked lapped (got lucky on this water block considering that its already at a mirrored finish)

If that's anything like what I've seen in Dells, then he would still get some nice gains buying a high-end cooler, if it fits.

I am using the Dell XPS H2C ceramic liquid cooling setup. Sorry for the late reply.
