CPU cooler for an E8400
I plan on overclocking it above its 3.0 ghz clock soon. What good, cheap CPU cooler can you recommend?
Edit: I have a few ideas: the Tuniq Tower, or the Xigmatek s1283. Last edited by Andrew03; Jun 20, 2009 at 06:26 AM. |

Re: CPU cooler for an E8400
yea the freezer 7 pro is good, costs probably 20 bucks.... the OCZ coolers are good and xigmateks are good as well.... any cheap HDT should allow you to do that...
i think you can even hit 3.0Ghz on stock cooling...

Re: CPU cooler for an E8400
All good recommendations so far.
For myself, go with an Xigmatek HDT-S1283. I have it personally, and love it. It works just as good, if not better than a lot of the larger, or rather deeper coolers of it's type. If you have the time to rip your system apart, then grab either the Xigmatek ACK-I7751 Crossbow Mounting Kit (for 3pc heatpipes & LGA775), or the Xigmatek ACK-I7361 Crossbow Mounting Kit (for 3pc heatpipes & both LGA775 and LGA1366) bolt through kits. I would go with the latter Crossbow kit as it means you can use the S1283 with the i7 later on. These kits replace the push-pin mounts on the cooler. Why the bolt through kit? Whenever you are dealing with tower coolers, the heavier they are, the less direct contact they can have with the surface of the chip as they will lean downwards when mounted in a vertical tower. The space is minimal, so don't worry about this. It's just 1 of 2 design flaws (if that) of the push-pins (the other being the fact that you can push the pin in, yet not have the pin actually in the hole, meaning that it can pop out). What the bolt through kits do is pull, and hold the heatsink onto the chip, and stay that way even when mounted vertically.. or upside down, making for better contact and heat transfer. Essentially you get yourself a more secured heatsink. There's nothing wrong with using the push-pins, and the cooler, whichever one you pick, will work just fine with them, but as soon as you use a bolt through kit the first thing you notice is that the temps drop 2-4 degrees below what they were with the push-pins.

Re: CPU cooler for an E8400
A Scythe Mugen 2 is also very good and there is a fan already included
![]() Freezer 7 Pro is decent, but I would pay a little more for a Mugen. |

I have had good luck with the Cooler Master Hyper212 as well as the Scythe Katana2.
Another one you may look at is this one DH recently reviewed. http://www.hardwareheaven.com/dh-revie...cooler-dh.html EDIT: I see the Rosewell cooler has already been posted it does look good though !!

Re: CPU cooler for an E8400
looking at other reviews of that cooler I'd say pretty trustworthy. Price doesn't say everything. The Arctic freezer 7 pro is cheap too, but a pretty good cooler.. It's the same with the core contact freezer I suppose.

Re: CPU cooler for an E8400
The Freezer 7 I have here as well and it works great and cheap. The only issues I have with it are the fan can't mounted anywhere else on the heatsink and the fan direction can't be reversed either physically or electrically (4 pin PWM)
