Overclocking an Intel E8500

I have a Intel 8500 in my PC that I built in Feb. My friend who helped me built it(as this was my first PC) told me go in Bois and change the overclocking setting on the core voltage from 333 to 400 and make it manual. I'm using a Bio-star T-Power I45 mother board. I went from 3.17 Ghz to 3.80 Ghz. I started to experience sudden lost of video, and video card fan running wide open. I put the Bois settings back and the video loss stopped for about a month. I found out talking to the factory tech, I needed to hook up a 4-pin power lead to the mother board. I did this and the problem seems to have gone away.
My question is if I go back to the Bois settings, will running at 3.80 Ghz hurt the E8500 over a long time? My temps are 29-C idle and 39 to 40-C at full load. I'm not a gamer per say, I use my PC for all purpose use.

Re: Overclocking an Intel E8500

3.8GHz is very mild for an E8500, i would say that its completely fine as you have the temps well below specs.... even 4GHz may be fine as long as it stays below 60C at load

and its not a Bois its a BIOS

and while you didn't quite change the core VOLTS from 333 to 400, you did raise the FSB from 333mhz to 400mhz, increasing the overall clock-speed. you should be able to go even higher if you want.

Re: Overclocking an Intel E8500

Hi Kris23,
Thank you for the tips and spelling HA HA Overclocking to me is the same as walking on ice the first time, you hope it doesn't break. I'm going to wait a few weeks to make sure my video is OK now, but I want to start overclocking a little later, and I want to research the subject .

Again thank you,

Re: Overclocking an Intel E8500

Kris23,

In Bios, i changed the clock core speed from 333 Mhz to 450 Mhz and that gave me 4.27 Ghz. I changed that down to 435 and got 4.12 Ghz. Also showed me the rated FSB was 1741 Mhz. My temps where 30-C idle and 40 t0 42-C at load. I'm going to leave it like this for a few days to see if the PC is OK.

Re: Overclocking an Intel E8500

hey abby, yea once you reach the 4Ghz limit you need to take special care if you want to overclock anymore...

the thing is that though your CPU may run normally, its not certain that it is fully at 100% when you test it with regular apps... i recommend using software like Prime95 to test your system load. that software will completely load your system as well as stability test it.

be sure to check your BIOS to see the temperature of your motherboard components like the NorthBridge (NB) as that may be stressed with the system in an overclocked state as long as the load stays between 50-60C max then you should be fine.... though lower is better and i recommend NB temps to go to 45C if possible

kris23

Thank you for all your help! I'm NOT really a speed freak, so I doubt if I leave the BIOS where it is. I gave my old PC to my son (5 years old) and he is tickled pink with it. Of all the games I have played, I reallly LOVED Wings of Glory. I still hope for the day it might be reborn, but guess it will never happen. HA HA HA

Nice talking to you and Mac Daddy and the others,
