New to the overclock game (AMD Phenom II X4 940) and (9800 GTX+)
So I just built a new computer.
Here are my specs. Operating System: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. System Model: GA-MA790X-UD4P Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 940 Processor, MMX, 3DNow (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz Memory: 3070MB RAM Page File: 621MB used, 4334MB available I was wondering if there would be someone who can guide me through an overclocking procedure/guide. I want to boost the CPU as well as the GPU for an increase in performance. I'm not trying to go to the max but a little close there. my cpu runs at a stable 27C and my gpu on EVAprecision is at a 34C all Fans on high I have the antec 900 with all fans on high too. (Antec - Nine Hundred=) I only play world of warcraft and browse on the internet if Im bored. Thanks guys =) |

First off, I take no responsibility to the death or shortened life of any of your components due to Overclocking. Thats number one it isn't my problem if something happens and things stop working. Second, do you have a nice aftermarket cooler on top of that Phenom? Because you aren't going to get very far with the factory one. Also, check out this stickied thread for some information Official Phenom and AM2/AM2+ Overclocking Guide granted the information here might be a little dated but its a good reference as not a ton of things have changed. Also, does that Phenom happen to be a Black Edition? If it is a Black Edition the job will be much easier.
As far as the 9800 GTX+ goes I would try using a program like Riva tuner to overclock your GFX as this is the most effective method. Slowly increase the clock and memory speeds via this program until your rig becomes unstable or the temperature becomes too high and then back it off a few points to achieve stability. I would suggest finding a couple of stress testing programs also so you can run them after your OC is "stable" to make sure that everything is in working order.

It's not much but I bought the
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler from Newegg. Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks Looking for a liquid cooler but thats later on =) Yeah it's the black edition. Forgot to mention that. what stress programs are out there? Freeware of course =p The best way to overclock is manually right? |

To stress your CPU you can use Orthos or OCCT, to test your memory you can use MemTest 86+ and to stress your GPU, well, I've already covered that with ATi Tool.
I'm not an AMD guy so I'm not sure about overclocking the CPU or memory but those applications should work the same with that platform as it does with Intel. |

Rikky, please use the edit button instead of quad-posting.
And to answer one of your questions, Yes. Overclocking manually is 9/10 the smartest thing to do when it comes to overclocking. Automatic overclocks sometimes aren't programmed correctly and sometimes bypass temperature controls and that sort of thing and usually don't yield the best results. Can you run a few benchmarks on your system and tell us what your frames are like? If you're only playing WoW which let's face it, is hardly the most streneous game in the world then i don't see the point in OC'ing much, or do you play anything else? |

What does this do?

Re: New to the overclock game (AMD Phenom II X4 940) and (9800 GTX+)
On the graphics, I reccomend using something like Rivatuner to overclock and monitor temps, then Nibitor to set the overclock when you're happy, then you don't have to have some OC program running in the background all of the time.

Re: New to the overclock game (AMD Phenom II X4 940) and (9800 GTX+)
Ok well now that we know that you have a BE processor the job is much easier for at least a bit of the way. First off, what you are going to want to do is increase the processor multiplier in the BIOS one step at a time restarting between these step increases to check that your motherboard posts at that speed and that it will go into the OS etc. Keep that up until your temps or stability limit turning it up (or you get to the desired clock speed) if stability is your issue trying increasing the processor voltage ever so slightly to achieve stability. If your temps become too high you need to take down the multiplier to a stable state and thats pretty much where you are at with the processor until you get a different cooling solution. Thats about what to try first. If you are able to get to the top of the multiplier "cap" let me know and we can start tweaking some other things. Any one feel the need to interject me here if I miss something. I'm not the best with doing and then telling someone else how to since my OCing is a trial and error fest
![]() GDI!! I feel like a n00b seriously I didn't know that there was a way to set the OC so that I didn't have to have that running all the time. I fail! I have been looking for something like that for a long time . In any case I will be taking a look at that program when I get home . I just have to say that this solves all my multi-boot GFX OCing headaches thanks blib. Well that and the ATi program that is similar. I feel like I really need to brush up on stuff now.

Thanks alot guys and sorry for the million posts.
Where would I got about Benchmark testing? And what are the ideal temps to look for and not to go over? |

It will be the same as overclocking your GPU only this time around you have voltages as well as multipliers. Small steps and check for stability. Try to find the maximum stable frequency of your CPU and memory before you even think about modifying voltages.

seconded there. Pretty easy in the long run as long as you take your time.
