I Sprung a LEAK!!!!

Listen kids.....when you build a liquid cooling system you gotta pay attention.

in any case I was being careful and I blew a seal out of my water block.....BTW thanks a lot OCZ block is less than a month old and blows out the main seal.....phew* guess its back to swift tech.....

In any case there is good news. due to the shape of my GFX card's it caught all of the liquid and harmed nothing else in the computer.

But here's some pictures of what's left of my 4850.

Re: I Sprung a LEAK!!!!

bummer dude! idk if that's a warrantable failure as it's not a natural card failure; ie. artifacting/overheating. if anything, get OCZ to cover the cost of your gfx card and have them replace the block. the replacement block sell it on ebay!

oh, i forgot to ask. what kind of water did you have in the loop? it doesn't look like it was distilled water. if it were distilled water, that *shouldn't* have happened....

Water Ionizes as it travels through the loop. Distilled Water is Simply De-ionized. Which just means "excited" and conductive, once it contacts different materials it regains Ionization.

*tries to remember secondary school chemistry*

de-ionised water is simply pure water, with no contaminants, but as soon as it comes into contact with any metal (and many non-metals) it'll start absorbing ions from the surroundings, so even de-ionised water is lethal to electronics, it just might take a fraction of a second longer to kill things than tap water

technically is "non-conductive" stuff from PrimoChill. Basically distilled water with color and some chemicals I get it because i like the color and dying distilled water is a big no, no....bad experiences with that.

In any case any thing that you put into the loop will become conductive outside the loop with the addition of dust or anything.

In this case it was the dust on my gfx card

But all it well i picked up a new block and 4850 HIS ICE Q Turbo all for under 200 bucks and I will be back in business by tomorrow.

Ionization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charged Electronics Cause Ionization Contaminants Are a different category.

De-ionized water is actually not lethal to electronics, Once you add electricty to electronics though, you don't kill them. I worked on Electronics for Aviation we wash them with de-ionized washers. they then have to be "baked" in nitrogen. Bam.

Anyhow. That's getting off topic, let's have a moment of silence for the 4850.

Either Way Water hitting electronically charged components = bad.

So :\

Re: I Sprung a LEAK!!!!

Yeah its all fixed with a new block and 4850 i picked up last night (I keep a nest egg of money for if anything goes wrong since I OC on water anyway. All it well. No pics of the leak considering that I didn't find it until morning and by then most of the liquid had dried up inside the 4850 theres really nothing to show. But yes a moment of silence

Eh....first leak i've had in the five loops that i've done over the years (not counting the replumbing of the same loop five or six times) so I count myself lucky. This is another good reason why I don't blow all of my money on super cutting edge top of the line stuff.

Re: I Sprung a LEAK!!!!

Luckily enough, money can replace it

You got specs of the WC-setup SS?

Or a pic how it's mounted right now?

Re: I Sprung a LEAK!!!!

You never took apart the block ever? Did you get a replacement block from an RMA from OCZ? Or just buy a new one?

I've never owned an OCZ waterblock, but that should never happen. I've owned likely 10-12 difference Swiftech ones and a few from other manufacturers. Only issue that wasn't my fault was with a Danger Den Chipset Z (which thankfully they quit selling 4-5 years ago).

Well, here's the deal with OCZ waterblocks.....you HAVE to take it apart in order to install the AMD retention bracket as it comes standard with the 775 bracket. Yes I know its a little weird but thats the instructions. So, I disassembled the block, put the new bracket in place and then put it all back together. To make sure I tightened it enough I let it spend 48 hours in the new loop outside the case running to make sure absolutely no leaks. Then I put the system as a whole into the case and ran it for another 8 or so hours to make sure nothing go loosened up in the process. Then I installed everything in the proper location and hooked it all up.

So, to answer your question, yes the block had to be completely disassembled once before the install but as for being reassembled I made sure it wasn't going to leak. Especially considering that I was a little uneasy about haveing to do all of that in the first place.

I just went out and bought a new one because i had a raid that night and a new GFX card and installed it all and let it go for now. I will be trying to contact OCZ on monday hopefully about this and see about getting something . If they do give me a new one I will return the one in my loop currently to the brick and mortar store (since they told me I could) and install the new one when it comes. Luckily I just happened to have some computer money set aside already when this all went down.
