920 i7 overclocking

Id love to hear from anyone on DH who has pushed their 920 i7. How far have you managed to get it. what voltage, cooling, temperatures?

LN2 -100 Celsius, cold bug @ -112 Celsius

Daily driving with TRUE Copper, wound up having to boost VCORE to 1.2875

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

Can I ask why people use LN2 Dry ice when they are obviously only temp solutions unless you have an unlimited supply?

Is it just the thrill of how high you can get the chip? Or something else

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

Why do people game, drive fast cars, listen to music? Something I enjoyed doing is all. In the above case it was more about the 2 9800 GX2's than the CPU though. Dry ice and LN2 are not solutions at all, just a means to an end.

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

Well, I don't believe that's a fair answer. People game cuz it's fun, and drive fast cars cuz it's fun, So just LN2'g is just what, fun? For the whole however long you can run a bench session? Not to mention 75% of the setups are done out of cases????

I guess after dealing with computers for 15 years, if I can't run it 24/7 a certain way, I really don't want to run it that way at all.... Yes, you get really high oc, and really good benchmarks, but it's really a lie isnt it? Are you going to be able to play the ENTIRETY of crysis on a Ln2 setup? Kinda pushing it, arent ya?

Anyhow, I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll leave it alone, I just don't get why overclock it if it won't be perm.
GL with your setup

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

My setup is now in a case and is used 24/7 at 4 GHz on air, I posted that and the temps as well. Of course it is a fair answer, people that snowboard, skydive or race don't do it 24/7 either. Just for fun, to see the limit of the hardware. A bench session for me costs $65.00 for LN2 and lasts over 14 hours. Pretty reasonable entertainment costs if that is what I enjoy.

Some people like benching, like me. It's sometimes even more attractive than gaming.

@ Just Learnin'
2nd pic is also w/ the 9800GX2? Since 41 degrees is quite low.

No, that is with my GTX 295. I also have a GTX 280 for PhysX in the case. It is a very large custom made case with lots of flow.

I made it from aluminum diamondplate quite a while ago, an old pic with a Gigabyte mobo:

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

My currently 920 will do 4.4GHz on air w/ a Prolimatech Megahalem. On my single stage phase change I've had it up to ~4.65 stable. Couldn't take it higher w/ the mobo I was using. 222blck limit FTL.

Until I can find a used Classified for sale I'll be stuck with those clocks. Spending $500 on a motherboard is still something I can't consciously do.

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

nice cloks just learning, looks to be a treat of a time playn with the dry ice. i remember when u where building that case and had a thread goin along as u made progress, its really cool!/?

wish i could participate but kikn around a lowly C1 775 quad Xeon in mid case, not 100% stable yet, but 10 hrs blend x64 at 1.3125v @ 3.9/DDR2 1100 works for me!

*<- needs specs up dated*

My first OC on my new CPU! I know it's only 100MHz, but I'm really not going to do anything about it until I get a SpinQ from Thermaltake.

I expect they are all that way being refer coolers. But I guess newer tech than what I'm used to probably phased out any unpleasant noise by now.

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

I finally made the jump over to i7 and I have been impressed. I did have a rough time with the cheap(er) mobo I got at first but once I spent some more on a high end board all has been well.
Since I've never used an i7 before all I did for now was raise the vcore & qpi to 1.25v and set my ram to 1.6v. 4GHz was nothing and none of the cores even come close to 65c with the 120e and supplied fan.
I do notice that windows does not pick up on the 21x multi though; is it really running at 3.82 (20x) or 4.01ghz (21x) like everything else shows? I've disabled all power saving features including Turbo and it does not seem like the clocks ever drop from 21x no matter the load on it. It doesn't like it much when I manually set 20x though, even at lower clocks..
I have a bit of reading up to do on these before I attempt anything else.

It is just like Speedstep, nothing can read the clocks right. Go by CPU-Z. Ignore everything else.

Well my phase change can be heard in every room of the house But not all of them are this way.
Man do I like my 3.8Ghz on the stock cooler, or my old 4.2Ghz on the Z600...
Heck, I can even bench on 4.4Ghz with the stock cooler...

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

I would expect really high temps, with the stock cooler, and at those frenquencies.

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

I have set my Core i7 920 D0 seccessfully to 4GHZ on a 2000Mhz RAM last night.
Although, it seems my temps are in the sky.
I have set the MOBO to shut down at 85 degrees (celsius) while letting the fan go FULL-SPEED at 75 degrees. it is stable but I'm not sure if 85 degrees is healthy for my CPU...
My PC is set with DFI's ABS to these speeds, I need to lower the voltages just a bit maybe to reach a lower Temp.

I must say I'm surprised by how good this ABS is! Just loaded the profile for 4GHZ from their site and VO'ALA!

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

Thats good to hear. I've always wanted one of my procs to hit 4ghz

be careful of those temps..they are high and could damage your cpu. Try lowering the voltage and see if its stable, I've heard the D0 stepping are excellent overclockers so with lower voltage the temperature should go down a fair bit.

Re: 920 i7 overclocking

There's many D0s that can get past 4ghz stress test stable at stock voltage.
