Gaming Performance, 3rd party OC app

Hey guys,

AMD and EVGA released some new updates to their third party overclocking programs and I was wondering how much a difference running these in the background makes on gaming.

I've never really used any sort of third party software to overclock my motherboard and I've used Ntune (or coolbits) for my graphics card. I already know how to OC my CPU memory adjust timings and all that and I have it at a good setting already (1.8 opteron OCed to 2.8)

I'm just wondering how much of a hit my games will take by running these in the background.

Is it really worth it?

Re: Gaming Performance, 3rd party OC app

Considering my GTX 280 OC2 has approximately the same performance as my GTX 295 then I'd assume overclocking the graphics card does make a difference, although it was factory overclocked.

Re: Gaming Performance, 3rd party OC app

For the CPU I don't really recommend AMD Overdrive. It can be a way to quickly test settings but for a permanent overclock it's not a very good solution really. Not in my opinion anyway. For CPU/Motherboard OC it's always best to do it in BIOS, it will be a lot more stable that way.

When it comes to gfx cards I've fiddled around with riva tuner a bit with some previous cards but nowadays I only do the OC I can in CCC. It's enough for me.

I'm currently using MSI's Afterburner for my Gigabyte 5850 for monitoring purpose only. Afterburner has this overlay that shows my GPU temp and FPS while playing.

I'm not sure if running this makes a performance hit on my E5200, though.

Re: Gaming Performance, 3rd party OC app

All good info so far. I'm still wondering (performance wise) about using CCC or Ntune as opposed to a 3rd party app from the company that makes the card.
