i7 980X overclocking?
Curious to see what owners of the 980X have gotten out of their chip, in terms of overclocking and underclocking/volting.
I've managed to push mine to about 3.9ghz on stock voltage, with a 28X multiplier (still playing with the FSB). Runs about 34C idle and about 73C full load from prime95 using a Corsair H50 with an exhaust push/pull setup. |

Apparently, no one owns a 980X.

Here are some 4.3GHz results for you... http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...nce-43ghz.html
or a nice maximum OC i achieved last week: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/review...g-thermal.html |

Read through those already, always do
Thank you for throwing me a bone, at least, Veridian. One question for you, though - on the 980X, how much temperature variation did you get across the cores (range, average?)? |

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
Just a quick post, yesterday i set the multi to 30 (4009mhz) with auto vcore (1.288 CPUZ).
The good news is that the machine posted and booted, the bad news is that after 1:14:00 P95 large my temp was 91C

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
You mayyyyyy want to turn it down a bit, or get a better cooler. I did a cold shut down when it hit 85C - the technical limit is 101C I think, but Intel recommends not pushing it above 80 if I remember their specs correctly.

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I hear it shuts down at 125 and throttles around 100. Not sure though, but you are right under 80 would be ideal. I am in the process of shopping for a new cooler. Current one would be able to handle idle and real-world use, but as soon as i stress test it struggles. Only i would try and passively cool a 980X

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I have now replaced the Reserator 1 (it's been a good run, i will miss you) with the Venomous X + dual 2000rpm fans.
With x29 (3785mhz), auto V, room 23C, running P95 large for 1:58:00 gave max temps of 53/60C (coolest/hottest core) Then with x30 (4068mhz), auto V (1.288), room 23C, P95 large for 2:10:00 resulted in 61/69C. Alot better than the 91C i was getting ![]() This morning i booted with x31 (4123mhz), auto V (1.336), room 21, i'm hoovering around 27/35C. I will stress test later. Don't know what to do next. I want to stress for 8-12 hours with P95, IBT and other combinations of CPU tasks and 3DMark Vantage... Don't know what speed to aim for. I wanted 3.9, now, not so sure. Low 4ghz? Also, my room temps are low 20s now because fall/winter is here but in the summer when the room is 29-30 (AC not always running) then what...

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
What are you going to be doing, anyway? At 3.78 I haven't been able to push mine more than 70% load regardless, even on encoding bluray videos.

Furthermore, in that case, you should have gotten a quad :P

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I got my 980X over 60% off, given that my neighbor is head of regional sales for Intel for my state + the 5 surrounding states. At the time, the 940/950 was comparable, so I went for the 980X.
And now that I think about it, yes, it can max out on time to time while encoding video, but that's rare, and it never is as bad as running prime95 or any benchmark. |

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I'll be doing all sorts of things. Editing (images & video), encoding, transcoding, capturing, scanning, printing, ripping, burning, games, virtual pc, emulators, tv watch, tv record, benchmarking, organizing personal files (copying, renaming, moving...), helping people with their HDs (recovery, wiping, virus scanning...), web browsing (multiple browsers, multiple tabs), downloading, extracting, packing, office...
Could i have gotten away with a 930? Yes. Do i like my 980X? Yes. The money will be made back working at my job and the thought of spending so much will be history. I think i put together a well balanced machine. Just seems like a natural progression. P4 single core > E6600 dual core > Q6600 quad core and now, a hexa core. Would have felt weird buying a quad again. I want to push the gas pedal and know the motor will be there for me. Even though i will be doing alot of those at the same time, will i be doing that every single day? No. The horse power is there when i need it. I'm perfectly confortable under 4ghz, but the temptation is there. In fact yesterday i got a blue screen in prime after 3hrs, so either i back down or try and stabilize my settings.

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I was still running an E6850 from 5-6 years ago before I upgraded, with an 8800GTX and 4GB of DDR2 800, so I think I waited long enough. And I think CJ and I are in the same place - we needed an upgrade, so why not get the best every once in a while?
And yeah - there is the temptation of pushing it over 4ghz, but I mean, at 3.8, what is there I can't do that I could at 4? Fold proteins a little faster? PS: CJ, I still wanna see your benchmarks dammit They're going to be awesome.

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
Hey, I'm not arguing that people shouldn't have powerful computers, in fact quite the opposite - I think you should go for the highest clock speed possible.
If, however, you're content to run a 6 core extreme edition CPU at a clock speed where a highly overclocked quad would perform better, that seems odd :P I guess the reserve is there in future if you need it, and more cores is always good to have for future proofing and epic multitasking, but I don't wanna see good hardware (better than I will have for a long, long time - your old PC is better than the one in my specs!) going, even to a tiny degree, to waste :P My conclusion: Hit 4GHZ Synthesis, you know you want to :P

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I settled for 4 Ghz.
Memtest86 972x648 132KB Memtest86 972x648 97KB Prime95 Small 2700x1200 1.18MB Prime95 Large 2700x1200 1.21MB Prime95 Blend 2700x1200 1.18MB IntelBurnTest VeryHigh 1818x1042 817KB IntelBurnTest Maximum 1772x994 693KB BurnInTest 2940x1200 1.64MB BurnInTest 802x1108 118KB A little excessive but i just let these running over night or while at work. So far stress tests passed and general usage is stable. Hope everything will be good. I'll try to push the clock higher at some point in the near future.

Folding@Home -bigadv is a good stability test too. Plus you contribute to the project at the same time.

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I was bored today, so I pushed it up to 4.397ghz -- stable, but was maxxing out at about 83C, which I really am not comfortable with (not that I ever push it as much as IntelBurnTest does, anyway) -- lowered it to 4.12ghz, and it's maxxing at 67C. I feel comfortable there.

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
You didn't happen to run WEI at 4.397? The highest i've run it at was 4.1 and that gave me 7.8
I'm curious to see what speed would make it go from 7.8 to 7.9

Re: i7 980X overclocking?
I'll push it back to 4.4(ish) this weekend and see what WEI gives me. Though I get the strange feeling it's still going to be 7.8 -- WEI isn't exactly the best measure, yknow.
