dual 8pin CPU power for overclocking needed?

I have an antec 850Watt power supply and thinking about getting a 1050Watt because I want to grab another GTX 570. One thing I'm curious about is my mobo has dual 8pin CPU power plugs. The power supply I use now only has one power jack, but the 1050 has 2. I was wondering if plugging in two would help me overclock better/further. I have a core i7 950 @ 4.0GHz (20x200), 6 x 2GB Kingston RAM @ 1600

You'd have to be doing some fairly extreme overclocking (probably with sub-zero cooling) to benefit significantly from two 8 pin plugs as far as I know.

Also, a strong 850W unit should be fine for an i7 with 570 SLI.

Re: dual 8pin CPU power for overclocking needed?

tri-SLI, sorry

I was more wondering if it would give it cleaner, more stable power. I'm going to get the 1050 anyways, I was just wondering if I should spend time on overclocking again and see if I might be able to get a little more out of it.

btw, I'm also thinking of a submerged build this Christmas. Put it in an aquarium with mineral oil. Looked into this off and on for a long time now and always wanted to.

Wont hurt, thats for sure. I would say an upgrade would be wise for a tri-setup but not necessarily essential.

i find it's usually a good idea to provide power where-ever possible... even just for stock stabilities sake.

well, I don't have tri-SLI now, but depending on Black Friday or Boxing Day, if I see a good 570GTX on sale then I'll grab it. Right now I'm playing BF3 with everything maxed out (motion blur off - I hate that thing) and I'm well above 60 fps. Oddly enough, if I turn vsynch on then my frames fluctuate between 50 fps to 60 fps, they aren't very stable at all.

That's what I thought too, so that's why I'm upgrading to the 1050. I've seen reviews on power supplies on here and it looks like an 850 would still work for tri-SLI on my system, but I'd rather have the full power that nvidia says it needs.

the way i look at it..

if you plan to use your PSU over a long period of time.... go big.... go expensive (within reason) and never had to worry about it for years.. specially if it's modular (as usually if new cables come about, you can buy just the cables and keep using the psu)

My Corsair HX1000 will be able to do what i need for quite some time.

I'm looking at the Enermax Revolution 1020 (I was thinking it was a 1050, but I was confusing it with the Corsair one that I was looking at as well). Modular, 85+, and a decent price ($215CAN)
