OC i7 920
I'm a complete OC novice so be kind
![]() I'm considering lightly overclocking my gaming build for that little extra power. I'm not bothered about 8 threads so if disabling Hyperthreading helps then by all means. Core i7 920 ASRock x58 Extreme6 Corsair Dominator GT 2000MHz SPD Latency: 9-9-9-24, Tested Latency: 9-11-9-27 (according to Corsair's website) BFG GTX 260 OC2 (keeping this as is) Coolermaster Hyper 212 with 2x Apache Blacks The RAM & motherboard I already had, the i7 I got from selling the AMD system's 620, motherboard & RAM. I'm probably looking for around 3GHz, maybe more depending on what is recommended.

Re: OC i7 920
3ghz is a sinch.. disabling hyperthreading isn't necessary at all. the only time I've seen that become a remote requirement is when trying to get the highest possible stable OC.. that's well into the 4ghz range which is a little tough on the i7 920.
3ghz and 3.2ghz are fairly easy with even a stock cooler. Pretty much just bump up the fsb a bit, may be able to hit 3ghz with stock voltages no problem.... i know my i7 920 was the 2nd generation model hit 3.3ghz before failing to remain stable using stock settings with only a fsb increase.

Re: OC i7 920
I found a tutorial here for overclocking the i7.
I'll take it in stages but might attempt the 4GHz. Any tips/suggestions/tweaks?

Re: OC i7 920
Just be sensible, use your head and don't be afraid of the clear-cmos jumper, and you'll be fine :P

Re: OC i7 920
I used the built-in OC profile in the end to get to 4GHz. Installed Windows, installed SP1 then decided to use Prime95
![]() All seems well with stability and temps aren't too bad (at 100% it wavered between 71°C and 84°C, idles around 40°C) so I think I'm good. Yay ASRock.

Re: OC i7 920
What settings is it going for (Vcore, RAM speed, Baseclock)?

Re: OC i7 920
Couldn't tell you, I'm afraid; the PC isn't at mine any more so I can't look it up. All that I can remember is the base clock being 200. However, I can tell you that the processor has D0 stepping, which, apparently, is better for overclocking.
Someone at my workplace has a C0 920 and he couldn't overclock past 3.33GHz with 1600MHz CAS 7 1.5v RAM.
