Higher temps with SLK900

I just got an SLK900 but my temps seem higher than with the SLK800. With the slk800 and a 46cfm 80mm panaflo I got 38c idle/ 46c load temps with my CPU at 2.4GHz/1.75v. With the slk900 and the same clocks/voltages I get 42c idle and 49c load using a 56cfm 92mm panaflo fan. Also the same thermal compound is used for both setups. I've tried reseating it twice with no luck. The only thing I can think of is that I only used one plastic washer on a NF-S v2 board. Anyone using the same board/heatsink that can tell me if they used the extra washer?

That HSF is better the the 800 you may want to check the fan and check that the heatsink is seated good on the core of the CPU. Also you need to make sure that if you have a ABIT motherboard they are know for showing temps that are higher than actual. You may need to download some third party software like Hardware Doc and see if th temps are thesame in windows as they are in BIOS. you also can do some lapping to the heatsink and it wil hekp your temps.

try your 80mm fan on your SLK900... it is possible that you are not getting enough air flow THROUGH the cooler because the 92mm fan hangs off the side so much. BTW... I broke down today, and I am replacing my Thermaltake Volcano 7+ with a Thermalright SLK-800 ... not a huge step... but after some lapping I should be able to reduce the noise a tad.

Thx guys. I've reseated the HSF afew times and it looks like it's making excellent contact with the cpu. I will try MBM to recheck my temps but I think what is hapenning here is exactly what you said Wyre. The huge 92mm fan might not be getting enough air through the heatsink and I will have to order another 80mm fan again

Do you guys recommend any fans other than panaflo? I've been using those for a while and I don't wanna be missing out on anything better

Anyways, I will let you know how the new fan works out. One thing I will miss is the extremely low MB temps this 92mm fan is providing. Oh well, I guess bigger is not always better.

If you look at ALL the test done on the SLK-900 they have all shown that an 80mm fan performs better then the 92mm... I personally use a 80mm SmartFan 2 from thermaltake on mine. My temps underload on an OCed xp 2500 never reach above 95 F. Go 80mm... it will help ya out

Sounds good. I ordered a TT SF2 with the coolmod and manual control dial...seems like a sweet fan. 75cfm when cranked is alot of air for a 80mm fan. Will let ya know how it goes.

Great choice as I also use that same fan but on my SLK-800 HS. I have it set nice and low to keep the noise down...but when needed, I crank it up to full blast for best performance.

I actually have my TT SF2 set with the thermal probe to the backside of the CPU..... that way it auto adjusts.....then again with the SLK-900 It never seems to have to adjust speed....Always at low.......muhahahahahah

No on the backside of the CPU... the pin side.... Thermaltake includes the probe with VERY tiny wires that go between the CPU pins..... Tape the probe in the open spot on the bottom of the CPU....... works great....

Crap guys, I got the new TT2 80mm fan and my temps are still pretty darn high. I'm running the fan at around 3900rpms and I'm still at 42c idle...eveything stock! I have reseated the 900 afew times and it looks like its making excellent contact. The heatsink and fan get so hot it's not even funny. I put my bros 3000+ in and it idles at 30c and hits 35c max under load, put mine back in and it's at 40c+ idle...WTF??? Could it just be a very hot running chip? I've never seen this before.

I get around 40c with an SLK900 and a 92 mm ystech fan at around 5000rpm... my temps are around 40c at 1.8 core volt at 2.35-2.4ghz (its damn hot here atm so my temps are up 5c with ambient room temps pusing the cpu up to 45c).

You have a 200fsb chip right man?

WOW..... Not sure why you are running so dang hot.......Like I said, my temps are ususally 34-35c under full load......Sure you have thermal paste on that thing?? heheheheh

Thats really odd. I'm sitting here idle atm at sys 25c cpu 35c house temps 74f right now. 41-42c folding and running prime. Fans rotating at 3,153.. I set mine up like krazy1 using the sensor and I switched to AS Ceramique. 3 things pop into my head to try

1. Double clean the cpu to make sure your got all traces of your old paste off ,possibly some residue somplace on the cpu where it shouldn't be ?

2 You only used the 4 white pads on the underside of the hs right ? I made the mistake of trying to use the 2 thin black strips as well. Got an almost immediate ambulance beep . Thankfully the cpu protect stepped in and prevented a thermal meltdown

Instructions were not clear about those strips so I'm guessing their for p4's since my hsf is working fine without'em.

3 Silly question but you do have the fan clipped on so it's blowing down through the hsf ? Yet another noob mistake I did once

Yeah, everything's done correctly. From what I've noticed it's just a hot running chip compared to the other two 3000+'s I've tried in my case. It runs about 8-10c higher than the others at stock speeds/voltage. I'm just gonna leave it alone, it's been a very long month with my PSU and Raid Array dying on me. I don't care if it runs in the 50's anymore; they say they can handle 70c+ so I say screw it.
