Default Post need help on info Oc'ing

1900+xp (1.6ghz), 400 watt psu, abit kr7a-133 mobo, 3 case fans, thermaltake volcano 7+, 512 + 256 mb of generic pc2100 ddr ram w/ thermaltake heat spreaders.

can anyone just give a couple suggestions on what to do to oc... i would like to reach at least 1.7 or above with only air cooling.... should change the multiplier or fsb, and how high should i raise the voltage from default (1.75, able to reach 1.85 in bios) tia for anything and is there any where i could read about this

Easy stuff. I bet you'll hit 1.8GHz or higher, actually.

Unless you want to mess around with closing L1 bridges, I suggest you stick to bus o/cing. You have what appears to be a very decent cooling setup.

Bascially, what you should do is this: raise the FSB slowly (maybe 5MHz at a time), allowing the system to boot. Once you've booted into Windows, run something that will stress your system, like a few 3DMark2K1 tests. If the system is stable, restart and try a new FSB setting. If it isn't, give it a little bit more voltage and try again.

If you have trouble hitting high FSBs, it is likely your RAM could be holding you back. Set the RAM to run at a lower speed than the FSB, or with less agresssive timings and this may help. Heatspreaders on the RAM do absolutely nothing, but if you want to feed RAM more voltage, this can help stability.

138fsb now... (1654) but for some reason in the 3dmark2k1 test, at the one part with the dragon carousel w/o the 8 lights... it just keeps looping the scene over and over again non stop... i dont think its instability because i can still quit out and do other stuff... maybe something is conflicting?

first step in overclocking should be to install MBM 5 and monitor your temps
then your immediate bottleneck will probably be that generic ddr but you still my hit 1700 with it. Before I did anything else, I would d/l, install and configure MBM 5 and report some temps....

Default Post dam it

EDIT:

now (hopefully stable)

1900+xp (1600@1704)
12x 142fsb
1.8vcore
2.65 ddr core

30 celsius(system) & 45 celsius(cpu) at idle...

best i can do for now... until i get some better cooling i guess... if i change the 12x multiplier to anything besides that (12) it wont even boot to the bios screen o well im still happy i got it to 1.7 as it still was my goal...

you're probably right about the generic ram... dam... cant afford some brand name high quality stuff...

You won't be able to change your multiplier unless you unlock the chip. I've never done it, and if you aren't electrically inclined, I probably wouldn't attempt it.

Your cooling is excellent -- 45C is great!

Default Post ...

i let the computer stay on for a couple hours, looping through some 3dmark tests and etc... but now after it crashing it wont even load the windows sign, it will just restart after the first screen where you can select to go into the bios and keep restarting if i let it go on... anyone know what kind of problem that would be?

EDIT:
n/m for some reason it "formatted" itself, BOTH OF MY hd's... lost some important stuff... o well this DOESNT teach me a lesson and i say it was a freak accident type of thing so im off to oc some more...

have to disagree. 45c idle is too hot and i would not push it any further until you get that down to about 40-41 idle (or less). You want your cpu temp to be 8~10c above your board temp ideally. Yours is 15c idle! Under your 3dmark load you could easily be up over 50c. Now if that was asus mobo you'd be OK as they register @ 4c high but abit is right on. For next investment I suggest Thermalright AX-7 with a thermaltake volcano 7 fan (or other equivalent fan). Be about $40 shipped altogether. I don't think the heat is causing the instability at this point but it will shorten the life span of your $107 cpu investment. Heat = enemy

get those temps down and I bet we getcha up as far as mr. generic memory will go.. (150+ hopefully ) we'll up some more volts and make a few bios tweaks and you'll be flyin' high

PS - d/l and install Drive Image 2k2. 30 day free trial (I think) but well worth the money to buy too It is the best disk image utility for NTFS file system and will save you lots of time the next time your hdd's go corrupt from OCing. Do a fresh OS install with all your basic programs (but NO VIDEO OR AUDIO DRIVERS) then set everything up the way you like it. run a defrag. then create image. It will take 2 cd's and then anytime you wanna come back to a clean OS install you're only 10 minutes away
