Default Post Unsafe Temps

What are unsafe temperature ranges for an AMD Athlon? And what should the temperature usually be kept at?

My CPU Temp on IDLE is 49-50 Celsius and System on IDLE is 30-32 Celsius...

Are those healthy temperatures...?

just keep in mind, heat shortens the life span of your components. Some people would not bother getting a 50c idle and probably @ 57c under load temp under control. But me personally, I would not be satisfied with those temps. Especially if you want to OC...

I have 2 pc's. One asus with an alpha pal/delta combo that keeps me at 41 and an abit kx7 with a thermalright AX-7/thermaltake volcano 7 fan that sits at 39. What HSF are you using?

your system temp is a little above normal... but your room may be warm, your idle CPU temps though are a little high for my liking ..... what compound are you using on your CPU? artic silver?

I would be aiming for idle temps of around 40-43.... full load 45-49.

I think the spec sheets on the Athlons say they can withstand up to 70C, so you aren't going to damage your CPU at those temps. Your temps are definitely higher than normal though, so I'd recommend a lot more case fans and a 8000rpm screamer on your HSF

in my sig you can see my cpu has a ThermalTake Volcano 7+ HSF with artic silver 3. i applied it myself and i accidentally smeared some off the cpu and a little bit around it... If i want to add more fans i'll probably have to mod the side of the case to create an airhole. I was thinking about doing that anyway. now actually the CPU temp stays at 45-47 idle now with the SYS temp still at 30-32. but i still dont like it as i know how air fluctuats and i read somewhere that athlons start dying at 60+. anyone give me a reference to an e-store where they have cheap fast fans and shuki recomended a ThermalRight AX-7? Also a good case modding tutorial for fans. also im thinking about getting a ThermalTake Volcano 9 and selling my friend the 7+ because at 49 decibels (i think) its pretty loud and annooying to me and the 9 has better cfm

90C, actually.

Although I'd worry if I was in the 60s. Your temps are fine, IMO.

I'd clean that access AS3 off that cpu ASAP. it can short things out including bridges on mr. cpu could = dead xp I'd use plain acetone, isopropyl alcohol or naphta to clean it good with q-tips. sounds like you may have too much on there too which can give rise in temps.

didn't realize you had volcano 7+ hsf. That rumored to be good hsf. If I were you heres what I would do:
1. go to napa autoparts or wal-mart and pick up 2 sheets each of wet/dry sandpaper 600 grit, 1000 grit and 1500 grit and a can of brasso
2. disassemble hsf from mobo
3. remove cpu
4. clean everything very well
5. take about an hour and lap, lap, lap that volcano 7 in figure 8 motion over and over on that really, really soaking wet sandpaper. starting with 600 and working up to 1500 grit. remember to rinse hs and paper often to get rid of metal shavings. then rinse thoroughly and dry with blow dryer or in oven (really ) let cool.
6. apply brasso and try and achieve nice mirror finish
7. using cut off end (1/4 inch wide or so) of old credit card, drivers license, library card (you get the picture) I'd apply 1/2 size of grain of rice to end of cut off card strip. then apply very thin but even coat of AS3 to cpu core. Just enough to cover the letters and give a smooth even coat.
8. insert cpu into mobo
9. carefully, very carefully with that stinky volcano 7 clip he bites!, reinstall hsf on cpu/mobo - DON'T CRACK CORE
10 . hook all back up and power up and now jump for joy at seeing 40-41 idle cpu

It came out but I haven't seen it in any of my local stores yet.... Of course you can view the specs at http://www.thermaltake.com

I dont get what that means... lap lap lap that volcano 7 in figure 8 motion? w/ soaking wet sandpaper? does that mean to just sand the bottom of the heatsink over and over?

also i underclocked (or whatever) back to plaing old 1900+ (1.7 -> 1.6) because of instability, probably from the heat i think... so if i can get that idle CPU temp down that will probably help a lot too. I dont know why theres such a big diff between my SYS and CPU idle temps... now its 42 CPU and 29 SYS Idle. 13 diff... shit

after a few dollars and an hour or so of work I bet your down within 8c of case temp... if airflow is good that is.

You think that is bad ?
haha, mine idles at around 58 and i have a friend that idles at around 65 and has 70+ at load... he has had it that way since he bougt it (must be a year or so) without any problems or crashes it's a TB 1400MHz and mine is a XP 1700+. I have watercooling on the ingoing tho..

oh man! told you that volcano 7 bites....

sorry to here about your loss

newegg got good price on chips and good customer service. retail cpu gets you 3 year warranty (not against cracked cores though sorry) and for $5 you can get a 1 year warranty on OEM chips.

edit - also wouldn't hurt to bend that clip out just a bit to ease installation on next one. or others have replaced clip altogether!

very sorry about your cpu... but I've always wondered.... how is it that people chip their cpus? i just want to know so i can avoid it. i will be installing a heatsink soon, so i don't want to take chances. i decided not to get a shim.

I dont think shim's actually protect the cpu itself because all it does is lay an even surface AROUND the cpu leaving the actual thing exposed. Shims are just for supposedly better heat transfer. I dont even know how the hell i managed to chip it, must've been weakened or something because from what it looks like, when it touched the HSF a piece just attached itself and rubbed off. Also that Volcano 7+ is one huge ass HSF Damn Im pissed off

oh yeah and i was wondering when the AMD Opterons would be coming out and whether or not they would be Socket A?

i believe its by rocking the HSF over the cpu insted of just clipping the clips with the inserts for the screwdriver.. it couses the core to chip when you rock the hsf against it...
Zir knows from experiance =X

Neither ClawHammer (Athlon-64?) nor the Sledgehammer (Opteron) will be socket A.
