I purchased some memory cooling kits from some computer store in the middle of nowhere. It took about 15 minutes to find the damn place
But anyways...Did I waste my money? I think yes. I used what the kit gave me. Sawwed the ram sinks to fit my memory chips. With that all done. What do I get? I got a 9-10 MHz increase without artifacts. And the Heat Spreaders for the SDRAMs... I hope they're doing their job. I think they are. Is there some special way I'm supposed to put these RAMsinks? Current clocks are 288/261. I previously had 297/250 but I notice that if I reduce core down a bit I reduce artifacts.. Odd? I tried going 275/275...No go. Artifacts everywhere.

You can't simply give it better cooling and hope for it to overclock waaay higher. You have to volt mod it. From your story, I'm guessing that you have a non-ati or nonretail 8500. You have to do a VOLT MOD. This can be done with a pencil and a multimeter (or a volt meter). The mod gives the card's memory and core some more voltage so that they can overclock higher. This voltage will also generate more heat and that's where your ramsinks come into play. They help keep these temps down.
I recommend you get your core voltage to 1.7 and your memory voltage to 3.7. This should give you enough juice to overclock to 300/300 (or even higher ). Just make sure you have a well ventilated case and you keep those ramsinks on. (If you just want to reach ATI Retail speeds, you can play it safe by just changing the voltages to 1.65 and 3.65 )http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=953 WARNING: DO NOT ATEMPT THIS WITHOUT A VOLTMETER OR A MULTIMETER!!! IN SOME CASES, PEOPLE DESTROY THEIR CARDS BECAUSE THEY RAISE VOLTAGES TOO HIGH (if you want to play it safe, then just stick with my suggested voltages )!!!!

Volt Mod is too risky in my opinion. I don't have a Volt Meter for one thing. And the thought of frying my card...Not so good

Artifacts come from heat right? So...does insufficient voltage result in artifacts as well or what?

yes, insufficient voltages result in artifacts and some very messed up 3d (when ram is hot) and also results in lockups (when cpu is hot). you shouldn't worry too much. just buy a multimeter (20 dollars at radioshack). i mean.. you've bought your ramsinks, why waste them without doing a volt mod? its reversible after all....

Why am I posting articles in this Forum when NO one is reading them ... hmmmm
Just read my article about me R8500LE O/C ... ![]() I recognised, that it is not really the heat ... 'cause with my voltage mod (memory up to 4V <-- critical value, so DONT try it!!!) I can go up to 325MHz in Memory Clock, and after 3 hours of testing (3DMark and so on ...) every memory-module is about ambience temperatur of my room. So in your case, without VModding it, it's simply the low memory-voltage. Core clock up to 300MHz should be no problem with a raised Voltage and the Stock-Fan ... but if you want to be sure, just replace it with an orb (blueorb, crystalorb, ...) Maybe some of the board admins wants to make my thread (R8500LE O/C) sticky ? Would be nice, to discuss O/C Problems there !!! As I said 4 times now ... don't blame me, if you damage YOUR card ... :>

I use the TT heatspreaders on my DDR main memory - allowed me to run at a higher FSB with active cooling as well

Sounds like you got some good gains from a simple $20 mod. Doesn't sound like a waste to me
