Hey guys, I've been in spending mode this summer (got work, lol) and my AX-7 will be coming 2morrow.
Think I need to lap it b4 putting it in? And on a second note, is lapping HS/F's really worth it?

As you requested.
(I'd lap the puppy, but I'm rather insane that way. Even if it didn't add any performance it'll give it that nice personal touch. )

![]() Anyway, my AX-7 just arrived in the mail today and has a very good mirror finish. There are some "manufacturing lines" on it, but those are very subtle and probably won't make a difference. I don't think lapping is worth all the effort unless you get a POS heatsink that has noticeable blemishes (I had to hold it up to my face to properly see the "manufacturing lines")

That's what lapping's supposed to get rid of, lol, I wonder still...

I would lap it. And degree of improvement depends on how badly the hsf needed lapped! had a buddy of mine go down from like 56 to 44 after spending 4 hours lapping it with up to 2000 grit
I lapped my alpha pal for about 30 minutes and got 3c.

I had a Duron Morgan core 950 that showed only about 60% contact with the HSF. Lapping the CPU slug brought temps down from 28 Case/58 CPU Loaded to 28 Case/44 loaded. Lapping the slug is a good thing

I didn't at 1st, I was happy with my 35C idle @ 145 FSB (1800+ to 2000+). I might later, when I actually can unlock it (tryed once already, messed up, gonna try later, when I get time)

So for you folks who lap, where and what kind of flat did you use? Glass would be the most readily available I suppose...
As for polishing grit I've read numerous posts indicating that a rough (600 grit) finish works just as well as a fin (2000 grit) finish as long as it's equally flat. Mize (thinking of lapping my AX-7)

yeah, I'd be happy with 35c too
![]() mize - I did use glass. wet/dry sandpaper, 600 grit to get it flat (lay straight edge from corner to corner across hsf then place in front of bright light to see if any light passing through. then do other corner to corner) Once flat, moved up to 1200 grit to finish. Others then go on up to 1500 or even 2000 but I didn't take it that far. Just keep the paper really wet and rinse it and hsf often to keep metal shavings out of the way. Figure 8 motion. And I've used the glass off of a glass end table and I've taken a window out and used it before

Excellent! I'd never thought of using a glass end table (we've got one of those somewhere) - that'll save me the hardware store glass purchase.
Thanks! Mize

other ideas that come to mind are.... taking picture off wall that has glass in it, or mirror off wall.... or as uncomforatable as it would be, standing against a sliding patio door would work too. but I'd think he elbow would get sore pretty quick holding it up...

Did you know that class is actually a very slow moving liquid, and that over the period of a year it can move 1mm? So your glass table, depending on age could be unnoticably warped downward...interesting stuff eh?
