Overklock my system
Hi
I have an P4 2,4C-800 FSB with HT and an ABIT IC7-G mainboard and 1 GIG dual channel PC 3200 memory from Kingmax. My PSU is from Antec 300W, my videocard is an Radeon 9800 Pro. When I try to overklock my CPU to 2,8 or even 3,0 gzh it fails. I have tried to overclock it to 2,6 ghz and it runs fine for about 10 minutes then the system shuts down. When I decided to buy my mainboard it was because you could overclock the CPU to 3,0 ghz with no problem. So my question is; do I have to weak PSU or is it perhaps my RAM?? |

Your power supply is in need of upgrade. You should really be running a quality PSU of at least 400w + with that combination. I really cant speak for your memory. But I can tell you that if you plan to OC then you should always get the best memory that you can and at the highest speed that you can afford. Once you get a better PSU take out one of the sticks of memory and try OC'ing it and see how far you get and then switch it with the other one and do the same. Also make sure that you have plenty of case cooling and cooling on your CPU.
Good luck and let us know how it goes

If I run the Memtest 86+, is that perhaps helpful to see what the memory is good for??

It would show if your memory was stable a highly overclocked settings.

Another question: Is there anything else (programs) if I want to see how good my RAM is beside Memtest 86+??

Memtest will show you if your memory is stable when overclocked. Other things you can use to check for stability are basic benchmarks like Sandra 2004, 3DMark 2k1, PCMark 202, and the like. Programs like CPU-Z will allow you to see your settings and also will show your voltages in real time, which is also very handy when overclocking, rapid fluctuations usually mean instability. Mother board Monitor will allow you to keep tabs on your temps, but is still only as good as your sensors.
Preventive measures with your hardware and good maintenance are your best insurance, the software only allows you to check what you are doing. It all takes a while to learn, and alot of guts to do it, unless you have DEEP pockets.

Again thanks for the usefull information!! I have tried different benchmarks and I am more than happy with the scores (3D mark 2003 - 5796, Aquamark - 41.980, 3D mark 2001 - 15998, Codecreatures - 41. All these results are with 1024x768 and not any o.c. But I wanted to run my CPU to 3,0 ghz because I read that it is capable of doing so with no problems (that is if you have a good PSU and so on.

You should have no trouble Danhill with a better PSU, 3 Ghz should be yours bud.
Welcome to DriverHeaven also!

I've also been thinking of buyin an additional HD after radeing the review of Western Digital Raptor Serieal ATA 10.000 RPM, but I do'nt know if I will gain much performance. The price here in Swden is quite good for this drive (about 900 €). Does anyone have experience of the drive??

The raptor drives are great
matter of fact if you check the news section theres a review on the 37.4GB model of it Also if you can try to get a PC Power and Cooling PSU. Much cleaner power than the Antecs and I've unfortunately had way too many antecs blow or catch on fire

Another question; what is the meaning of timings for the memory, I have'nt got a clue?? Should I also change the Timings when trying to overcklock or should I let my Mainboard set it to auto or default??

Wait a day before bumping. What chips does your memory have? You need to base your timings off of the chips it has.
BH5=2-2-2 CH5=2-3-3 D43-B=3-4-4 BH6=2-2-2 Those are the only chips I have memorized because those are basicly the only good ram chips out there. |

The Specs for the ram are; I have no idea what that means!!
Capacity: 512Mb - Performance range - 200MHz ( DDR400, CL2.5 ) - Double-data-rate architecture; two data transfers per clock cycle - Bi-directional data strobe (DQS) - Differential clock inputs (CK and CK#) - DLL aligns DQ and DQS transition with CK transition - Auto & self refresh capability (8192 Cycles / 64ms) - Single 2.5V ¡Ó0.2V power supply - Programmable Read latency 2, 2.5 (clock) - Programmable Burst length (2, 4, 8) - Programmable Burst type (Sequential & Interleave) - Edge aligned data output, center aligned data input - Serial presence detect with EEPROM - PCB : Height (1,250 mil), single sidedcomponent

Look at its chips and give me all of the letters/numbers off of them. That info you found is worthless other than talking to dumb people to sound smart.

Didn't find anything about th chips in there, but I found that the max safe voltage for the ram is 3.6!! Usually its ony good ram chips that can take volts that high.

The timings let the system know how long it has to wait to access the memory. The lower the timings, the faster the system will be. When OCing past their max specs you can get away by relaxing(higher numbers) the timings to get more MHz out of them. Unfortunatly I cannot find any other specs on your ram other than that they do CAS 2.5. You can start by running them at 8-3-3-2.5 and slowly going down on each one until you get instability. The only way to get the most out of them is by trial and error until you find the sweet spot. No one can tell you the optimal settings, you have to find them. Also I know the naming is confusing in the BIOS so here are the most common settings you should worry about. Using 8-3-3-2.5 as an example; TRAS= 8 tRCD= 3 RAS= 3 CAS= 2.5 Hope this helps a little
