Searching for a good case to rip apart
I am by no means an expert case modder, but I’ve done my share of work. But I was wondering if I could get some help searching for my next victim.
My little sister wants me to do a Case Mod for here for her birthday, and I her current case is just not going to cut is as a base. I have searched online, and a little around town, but I just moved, so I have no contacts right now. Basically she currently has a Micro-ATX system in a fulltower case (i built it about 2 years ago for her, but she is happy with it). Now what I need is a new case that can house this current Micro-ATX board, plus have mountpoints for a full ATX if she ever gets an upgrade. I am looking for a Desktop case, not a tower (one that lays horizontally on a desk), with a non-stylized front bezel and top cover (no holes punched, no specific designs or fancy front cover, a little detail is ok, just so long as it does not impede design). It only needs to have two 5.25" bays, but I need at least three (two shadowed, one for a FDD) 3.5" bays (or two, and an extra 5.25" bay). I do not want a pre-modded case, in fact I plan on panting it and cutting a custom window into the top, so no fancy aluminum cases, no fancy plastic bezels (I know the bezel will be plastic, i just want one that is easy enough to paint), no windows, extra pre-cut fan holes in the side. Power supply is also not an issue as I already have a good one for her, however PRICE certainly is. I know I am being cheap here, but I really don’t want to spend much more than $20-$30 dollars total on the case itself, so I can spend the money on the actual modding. I am hoping someone here will know where I can but a case that matches these specs, or even better, if you happen to have one I can buy off of you. |

what i sugest is the generic case i used here search for 911-4ha
I really liked that one... easy to take a part and can really strip i down to mod them build it back up I spent about $30 for the gerneric case at a computer show. Wich is you best place to look. Now that the the pre-moded cases are so popular i'm now ging to be buying pre mods and then modeing them further.

Impressive!!! That case is almost exactly what I am looking for, the only issue is that she really wants it to sit horizontally on her desk, and I does not look like the drive bays on that can be switched between tower and desktop configuration... or can they? |

Desktop - 7 bay - I had a 7 bay AT desktop, and was really sad to retire it for a miditower (stupid case style) Typical, they don't have them in the UK side, but they do have a smart & cheap one with only two 5 1/4" Not sure that casemodding a desktop is very rewarding though |

That was a good lead, but I dont live in the UK, so shipping would probably be insane.
Right now, I have located two posible victims: The Super Flower SF-662 Or the ENlight EN-7180 The only probelm is that the Super Flower only has one internal 3.5" bay. And the ENlight has that nasty crossbar right where I hope to install a window... I might have some more leads, I just need to look into some things... |

I personally would go with the Enlight. I own 3 of their cases and must say they are a very well made case. That bar can be removed it you need to. We have cases like that here at work and remove the bar all the time... gets in the darn way... |

(NB. to use a link to ebuyer, you MUST be switched to the correct locality, or the link won't work, or will be the wrong item, as well as the wrong place) They also have MATX, but you wanted full, I believe http://us.enlightcorp.com/products/p...case&serial=70 The EN7200 3x 5 1/4" 2x 3 1/2" 2x 3 1/2" (internal) So they DO make a decent ATX desktop, though a 300W PSU is a little light for all those drives! I looked long and hard for a case like this - and never found one! Last edited by Matth; Feb 6, 2004 at 03:16 PM. |

I don’t know what to make of that line there... My apologies, I’ve been on Ebuyer before, but it was quite some time ago. I’ve been looking through the cases there, and also online at other retailers to see what pricing are going to run. That particular case with shipping is probably going to be around $50-$60, not bad, but the case certainly is overkill for the project. The EN-7180 will run me around $30-$40, and has exactly what I need. I don’t feel good about that crossbar still, If I can remove it, that’s good for the mod, but that crossbar looks to be the only cross support for the case, not that we will be placing a monitor on top of it but the stronger the better. It just occurred to me that I might possibly know of a scrap house where I might be able to get an old beatout case really cheap, if not free. But I will need to check on that. If not Ill probably go with the EN-7180. Thanks for the help guys! Last edited by LastHitchhiker; Feb 6, 2004 at 04:34 PM. |
