Default Post TTV7+ & T-Bird 1.4

Hi everyone, im a new guy here, and ive just ordered a Thermaltake Volcano 7+, and i wanna use it to OC my T-Bird 1.4.
Dows anyone know how high i can OC it using this fan, if any? Just a rough idea would be good , or even if one of you have this fan and processor.

Thx , LP

Depending on all the factors involved, you could rightly expect at least 1.5, maybe 1.6

For example, my 1.4 was able to hit 1.6 and maintain a cool 42 degrees
But then I swapped my 8500 for a Parhelia and its now back to 1.4 at 48 degrees - which shows just how much hotter the Parhelia runs @ stock.

But I'm using an Alpha PAL HS with a quiet Papst 80mm 19dB fan.
I could stick a much much meatier fan on the CPU, but I like quiet more than overclocking

And welcome to our fourms

Seeing as you've ordered a new HSF you might want to check out this thread about lapping it

please, please, PLEASE be careful when putting on that volcano 7+hsf. In fact bend the clip out on it a little bit before even trying it! I know several people that have cracked their cpu core installing that beast. One guy cracked 2 xp's before he finally got rid of his volcano 7+. In fact if you e-mail Tt and request the single clip rather than the 3 hole clip they are reported to send it out free.

Now I'm definitely not saying it can't be installed with 3 hole clip without cracking the core (and mr. "broke two" probably isn't that coordinated... ) I am just saying be careful and take your time

i was reading that and the reviewer says: -
"I was very surprised to see that Thermaltake had used the standard retention clip (this was the only bad point of the unit), so you will have to use a Shim to prevent the heatsink from crunching your CPU!"

AARG, imma have to get one of these things :S or mabye i can make my own, although i dont think ive got any copper plating lying around...or any metal for that matter.

ok i edited my order for my fan(which is out of stock at the minute) and added an AMD MP & XP Copper Shim to the list, only something like £3 so thats good , my CPU might survive my clumbsyness now

Although im more than worried about it moving when im trying to wrestle my fan on, and it shorting something out

If you're worried about the shim, stop worrying. The shim won't move because AMD cpus have those 4 rubber cicle things which the shims use to stay in place.

If you're worried about the Volcano 7+ moving, disregard this post

I read some article earlier that showed a guy who fried his CPU with a copper Shim, but mabye he was just a m0

oh man, skip the shim (IMO) just email Tt and request the single hole clip. or just be really extra super careful with the 3 hole clip. Either way, the clips on those things are SUCK! I'd cancel the order and go with an AX-7 personally.... but that's just me...
