1gig ram vs.512mb ram
I am not doing any video encoding or anything of that sort the system is mainly for gaming, does 1gig of ram really make a diffrence over 512 in games or does just speed up the loading of levels?

The_Neon_Cowboy is correct especially in the new games that have been coming out this year I have seen a big difference in framerate.

go 1GB - in Far Cry demo the difference was amazing - no more stuttering as page file was accessed, now pure smoothness

my opinion go for 1gb..... nothing really needs it right at the moment.but think a little into the future things may change.
pagefile swapping is right down to a bare minimum also,no sign of it's use. think of doom3,hl2 far cry will be fairly heavy on resources. |

1 GB is nice
Don't be afraid of getting too much, we need people like you to buy more RAM so that RAM prices go down.
LOL Just kidding, yeah 1 GB RAM is great. Multi-tasking fun. Little to no pagefile swapping...and it looks good in your sig ![]() In games you'll find that there are some options you can tweak which can take advantage of plentiful RAM. example Q3 based games have the following: com_soundmegs com_hunkmegs com_zonemegs

I've been working with older systems for database input (low priority tasks) lately and there I have re-discovered the old menace of fairly regular harddrive swapping. As far as my own system is concerned I can only say; never more! While feeling fine with 768MB at the moment I would definitely go for 1GB on a new system. Games needing 512MB as a practical minimum have already begun to appear.

..... dude.. if you can afford it.. get the most the system can handle.. i would.. but i'm finding it difficult to find decently rated 1GB sticks of ram... (trying to pack 4gb into this machine)

Doesnt getting more ram actually slow the system down after a certain amount? I mean 1 GB would definitely help but 4 GB? I think i heard a good number i 1/3 the cpu clock for intel systems........but i dont know definitely go with the 1 GB though.

....er.... 9x system can't handle much for memory.. they don't have good enough memory managers... xp pro handles memory very well....

BTW.. the 1/3 deal was for swapfile... you usually want to see the swap file 3 times the size of your current total of memory installed... which... has in the last few years.... been thrown out the windows very quickly... of cource with 64 bit coming in... this might be brought in again.. .as the memory limitations kick in..
