overclocking gpu

Can anybody tell me how I am suppose to know when I overclocked the core speed to much? When overclocking memory theres that Artifact Tester utility thing that can be used. Is there something similar for core?

what kind of card are you wanting to overclock? ATi or nVidia?

If your'e using an ATi card, there is a handy little prog called ATI Tool witch does both core and memory (it might even work with nvidia cards but dont hold me to that)

it can be found here

Why is it that when I run this program, it says that my max core is 547, but I can run 3dMark01 at 575 with no artifacts (that I see, anyway). Which do I beleive? What's up with this?

it will give you a max core based on current memory settings, so if u ran 3dmark at stock ram speed, and max core at OCed ram...that's why....also...my guess is this is a better estimator as it isnt made by F-U-turemark

I take it that you let the atitool find the max clock speeds itself? I find that on my card I can get the card to 460MHz core but the artifact tester will only choose about 448MHz. I think it may back off a little bit or just picks up on artifacts that we dont see. Probably 1 pixel changes or something.

after a night of running atitool to find my max clock speed it came up with 420mhz and stock was 324. i ran 3dmax03 before and after the oc and the scores for before the oc was 200 pts higher than after oc. i turned down the core speed to 380 and then the 3dmax03 score was about 350 pts higher than before oc.

logla.... that tool takes the CAKE.... i mean seriously.... what it took with the tool 5 minutes... took me a few hours not to mention countless attempts throughout various 3D programs to get a artifact free fast overclock.....

Seriously.... use the tool... open it up.... run a FIND MAX Core clock.... boom. it hit 415.... no problem.... and then 420 without a hitch.... next... i set it to default again and ran the Mem MAX ....it nailed 374ish......

I run by default.. 415/370 (guaranteed no artifact) Even though i could run nearly 420/375..... If i had addition cooling other then stock... i'm pretty sure i could push some much better numbers...

I'm going to suggest this tool for any ATI user.... (brb.. gonna go run it on every machine i have that has an ATI vid card)

How do you make the clocks stay @ a higher freq. After I reeboot the core/mem gets back to defaults speeds.

Yea ATi tool is pretty cool! Danhill im sure somewhere in the option of ATI Tool there is an option...also i know that the radlinker tab in the omega drivers has an option to boot at your timings.

...... i use Radlinker/clocker that comes with the Omega drivers for the clock rates..... simply set them... then click the USE CURRENT and it'll pop up a message saying that it will boot at the select clock....

You can't. The tool is only really for determining your max artifact free overclock. Like judas says, use radlinker/clocker to set the speeds to what you want after you know how fast the card will go.

would it prolong the lifespan of my vidcard if i left the speeds at stock speed during normal operation and only overclock it during gaming with the help of radlinker?

Heat is what kills electronics as well as too much voltage So the biggest thing that you have to worry about is that your card has good cooling on it. The stock cooling is fine for stock speeds. If you are going to overclock your card you will need better cooling..........and then of course your warranty will be void. So only do this at your own risk.

...... i'm running stock cooling..... durring normal windows operation.. the video card doesn't really get to warm at all..... it's when you play some games that make full use of the hardware that it gets toasty.. so no.... you wouldn't see much of a difference.. when i had a voodoo 3 3k agp... u ran it 220mhz (default 166) with stock.... and i had it for ages...

I have mine set at 400/400 and it runs smooth no problems
ATI toll will set it when you open it to the one you have it set too as well as radlinker

ATi Tool is kickass -- but its not fully accurate for the max MEM finder.... its 100% accurate with the max Core finder though.... for mem it was like 8mhz off... with the max MEM it found for me I saw white dots in 3dmark03, had to turn the mem down to avoid those.

ATi Tool still f**king owns!

white dots means core is pushing to hard... i did notice that ocing the mem... you have to lower the core as it's probably a syncing issue.... for example.. running my mem at normal i can push stock 430 no problem...... mem at 370 result in me having to drop the core down.... or else i get core related artifacts...

I beleive that's because the gpu create's heat which saturated the board, and therefor the memory runs hotter.
