AFAIK the only way to change FSB is thought the BIOS
If you've got a Slot A mobo, checkout http://www.amdmb.com as they often have beta/hacked BIOSes floating around in their forums which unlock nice features. I got a nice 5% boost + a few features from a beta bios I found there for my EPoX 8K7A+

I use CPUCool on my bios locked Compaq board. It isn't Intel, it's Compaq that locked the bios & as far as I know you CANNOT use the AMI/Intel bios to get in. All these years & I haven't found anyone that has cracked the Compaq bios.
![]() Mines an old i810e & CPUCool does have that board listed. The PLL is ICS. *IF* we can figure out your PLL #, we might have a chance. You say softfsb has i845 plug-ins? I'll dl it & see if I can help. I used it on mine b4, but I preferred CPUCool & deleted sfsb. One thing you need to know: it will change the FSB & that in turn will raise the PCI & AGP port mhz too. My on-board sound chip goes out above 10% (36.6mhz) oc. Lemme look into softfsb & I'll be back, if you're still here. JAV GBA! ***EDIT*** I got softfsb & now remember why I deleted it: it doesn't have the necessary PLL's or ANY of the i8xx boards. Get CPUCool http://www.podien.de & I'll try to help you find the correct PLL for an i845. CPUCool just updated w/lotsa new PLL's. HTH |

@ JAV
Hey buddy have you tried flashing bios ?? A friend of mine about a moth ago called me up and asked if i know how to fix his problem. He had 8 deskpro 4xx series and couldnt get better graphics card to be detected on those things. well i went over and checked the hardware(looking for a jumper etc. on mobo) but no solution. So i called up compaqs help desk here in greece and asked if there was anyway to install other cards that were not on their compatibility lists. The lady on the other side tried to avoid giving me solutions until i said that we had 8 of these and are gonna go to court if they dont help us( bullshit) so she said "well sir you can flash the bios of the mobo but at your own risk and also void the warranty" So i told her that we had them passed the 3 years anyway and that they were useless if we couldnt upgrade. Well to cut short this little story....we flashed the bios with a later version and guess what??....it worked !! Now these machines have alot of more options in the bios (especially conserning graphics). Plus we could install other non compaq approved ram too. To flash bios you have to know the boards serial number(not model) as the bios versions are according to that. good luck |

GreekRage,
I've flashed to a newer Compaq bios, but I haven't tried an AMI or AWARD bios on the board. When I eventually upgrade the mobo: I'm definately going to try! Nothing to lose then. What bios did you use? When your friend hits delete on boot, can he now get into bios settings? I'm VERY interested in getting a bios I can 'tweek', as I'm sure many Compaq owners are. ![]() Compaq tech is a joke! They don't even know what processors work on which of their own boards. BAH! Ati, I'm still here, but I'm in California & I think we're on different time schedules so we'll be missing each other in real time. There is a utility @ PowerLeap http://www.powerleap.com/consumer/upgradefinder.htm Run that & write down all the info on the mobo & bios. I'll go get CPUFSB & look it over. What is the model # of the Compaq? Presario ??? This will take a little research to get the correct PLL #. The good thing about CPUCool is that if we pick the wrong PLL & it locks up, you simply unplug the comp for ~30sec & upon reboot: you'll be back @ the stock PLL & try it again. If we can figure out the i845 PLL, I'll contact Podien & he can incorporate it into the next release. ![]() I'll be back, JAV GBA! |

Have you installed this ROM (bios) update from Compaq: http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_det...twareVer=15388
I went looking for system specs & your comp is listed as a Presario 5400 & model 5446EA. There aren't any specs for it or even a manual on-line. As far as I know, Compaq uses ICS PLL. If your processor is a 100FSB, you might try the 9250-16B PLL & if it is a 133FSB, 9250-16-D may work. 200, 266, 400 or 533: I don't know. That's what I was looking @ Compaq for, specs. If we knew the stock settings, it would be a process of elimination on the PLL's that don't support stock settings & then trial & error on the ones that do. Start @ 1 step above stock & if it takes > ![]() I've messed up & tried the wrong PLL before. I got a 19,000mhz clock once & the comp locked (duh!) Simply unplugged for 30sec & upon reboot: all was back to stock. ![]() HTH & I would like to know which PLL you get to work. If I can assist, lemme know. JAV GBA! |
