safe overclocking with 9500 pro
i was able to get 4233 with a pretty high overclock of 340/315 with the stock hsf and the side panel open. i havent seen any artifacts so far so i will try again to get 355/315 to see what i will get. does anyone know if ramsinks actually cool the ram by that much? im planning to install vga silencer rev. 3, but the I-line memory could cause a problem and there is not much clearance for ramsinks with the vga silencer. also, what would be a "safe" overclock for playing a game such as far cry or doom 3 without causing any damage to my video card?

It's hard to find a safe overclock, since every card is not the same and overclocks differenly.
But as long you dont see any artifacts, you are more then safe, because you will always see artifacts if a card is overheating and this gives you time to underclock it a bit, to a level where you dont see any artifacts. But if you start to change the voltage given to the card, then there is a chance you fry the card! So upping the voltage more then 10% is not wisely, but anyway voltage mods requires a bit more work and can not be done from software. |

use ATi Tool to find your max safe clock rates then just set them with radlinker (both are in the newer Omega packages)

A word of warning
ATITool doesn't work well with 9500 PROs with unlocked BIOSes. I tried using ATITool couldn't find the safe memory speed. It kept on climbing down and down. The best way is to set a clockrate and then just loop 3Dmark03 a 3 times to see if there there is any stability problems. You can also play a game like UT2K3/4 or Far Cry.

im always a little hesitant in using ati tool to find the max speeds. the last time i did that, it fried my 9500 np. that card softmodded into a 9700 perfectly and got 4265 stock.. i think i'll try playing far cry and run ati tool only to find artifacts.

I don't like tools
I only overclock through setting the clockspeed in the video card BIOS. Utilities aren't for me.

i saw artifacts at 350/320, so i set it down to 345/315 and got 4265 on 3dmark03. even at that high of an overclock, i got an awesome 2 fps increase in far cry... im not going to risk damaging my hardware for just 2 fps. i've decided to sell this card in favor of a 9700 pro, which i found on ebay for $140. hopefully, this will run doom 3 on at least medium-high settings.
