exclamation got my new ATI silencer 1

hi all
ok i just got my new ATI silencer 1 and im going to install it later tonight.

but there is a little problem im sure some of you will encounter, i have a 9800pro 128mb and arctic-cooling made 2 different versions for the 9800 pro , "ati silencer 1" for the 9800pro 128mb and "ATI silencer 3" for the 9800pro 256mb/XT , i was sitting in the store for an hour trying to figure out if the silencer 3 will fit my 128mb 9800pro as it has the extra memsinks built in , while the "silencer 1" doesnt have ramsinks included, the store just got them today and they come in sealed pacages so they didnt whant to open them to try and fit a "silencer 3" which is made for 9800pro 256mb/9800XT on a 9800 pro 128mb card.
eventualy i didnt whant to take the risk of it not fitting so i took the "silencer 1" that for sure will fit my 9800pro 128mb and got some ramsinks for the mem.

this is an image of the "silencer 3" with the extra copper ramsinks.

did anyone manage to install the "silencer 3" on the 128mb 9800pro? it should only fit the 9800pro 128mb and the XT but maybe it will also fit the 128mb pro, i couldn't check this maybe someone else did?

cheers , ledzep.

edit:btw how good is the silicone thermal paste that comes with the silencer? or should i get some AS5?

instalation was very easy & didn't need to remove the shim.
i used the thermal paste that came with the silencer.
i benched a little with aquamark and got 2,413 gain in score to 39,714 with clocks of (430,365).

just whanted to share....

i guess the new VGA silencer rocks

ledzep.

How about that processor?

Is that going to overclock anytime soon? I got 44.2 K on Aquamark with clocks of 398/357

now thats very nice score with this not too high clocks but your cpu is overclocked quite much, i will oc my cpu once i get the sp94 runing with the 90mm fan i just got, curently cpu is runing on stock speed of 2.4ghz.

btw new 3dmark score with the silencer is 6052 with clocks of 430/365 (on stock cooling best score was 5,793)

cheers , lz.

It's on Air.

My CPU is on Air. Your CPU should be able to break 3.0 GHz no sweat. Nice Aquamark score. My 3Dmark03 is 65XX. BTW, I see you have the same LG monitor I once had before it prematurely died. How old is it?

yea i hope so , even told i can overclock it on stock cooling but i am a little afraid of doing that, so will order soon the thermalright sp94 heatsink , and install it with a thermaltake smart blue led 90mm case fan with speed control, then ill be able to push the cpu up and still keep it in a safe range so it won't die on me.

btw when i do install the sp94 on my cpu what thermal paste should i use?

Can't go wrong with Arctic Silver

I'm using AS3 at the moment, but you can go for AS5. Just, remember to apply it properly. You don't need a whole wad of it. Just enough to cover the surface area of the chip. If I were you, I'd just get AS5 and apply it with the stock heatsink. See how you OC with it. If you don't need to increase core voltage, it's not dire that you need a new HSF.

My bro is OCing his Northwood B 2.53 GHz to 3.23 GHz on stock with some AS3 and it's great.

P.S - Killing a Northwood is near to impossible if you're not wreckless. Thermal Throttling kicks ass.

what is the diff between as5 and as3? i never got it, anyway is it imposible to remove if i decide to get a new hsf? is it like real glue that hardens?

yes i heard that the stock hsf&fan are good but for 50$ ill consider a better hsf. not sure about volt modding its gonna be only after im stable on stock volts as im affraid of frying the cpu if done incerrectly.

btw did you hear about the "Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome (S.N.D.S.)"?
see this thread:

Haha...

I know that thread. That's old. A lot of people found their Northwoods..dying. Some people had valid reasons while others just didn't read up on the maximum voltages. Some thought it was the same as Willamette cores (The P4s before the first Northwood), and increased their VCores well over the safety limit and found their processors dying, but not due to temperature. The max safety is 1.75! (Read my sticky on this forum for more info)

Here's a quote from one of their members on the first page:

Quote:
My P4 1.8a now can only run stable at 100 MHz FSB and 1.5 bios Vcore.

It was running rock stable at 133 MHz FSB at 1.75 Vcore for almost 3 months then I step up to 139 MHz FSB at 1.85 Vcore, it was stable for about one week then blue screen.

Now only run at 100 MHz FSB
It's sad to see people don't do enough research before overclocking That's why I did that post way back then.

P4s have come a long way. They've improved greatly and it's very rare to find one that "dies" when operating within its boundaries.

Read the Arctic Silver 5 Instructions (With PICTURES YAY) before doing anything. I didn't cover mine like they showed by putting a small dab in the middle letting it spread cuz I didn't know how much to put, so I just spread it around covering the surface area resembling the way they do it for the AMD and early Celeron chips.

As for the differences, I think it's just improved formula and slightly better cooling results.

iv'e seen in other forums that there is a big confusion with the new silencer models so ill try to put some order in it.

the new VGA silencer is called "ATI silencer #"
where the # is 1-4 (4 versions for ati cards) there are 5 modeles for Nividia cards totals to 9 models

"ATI Silencer 1" for ATI 9500 (SE, Pro), 9600 (SE, Pro, XT),9700 (SE, Pro),9800 (Pro)
"ATI Silencer 2" for ATI 9600 (Pro, XT)
"ATI Silencer 3" for ATI 9800 Pro 256mb ,ATI 9800 XT
"ATI Silencer 4" for ATI X800 (R420)

for the NVIDIA cards there are 5 models:
NV Silencer 1 for Nvidia Geforce 4TI ,Nvidia FX 5700
NV Silencer 2 for Nvidia FX 5700 Ultra
NV Silencer 3 for Nvidia FX 5900 XT
NV Silencer 4 for Nvidia FX 5800-5950(Ultra)
NV Silencer 5 for Nvidia FX 6800

pics of all models can be found in this website:
https://www.zigzag2000.co.il/catalog...&filter_id=135
hope this calrify the mess.

lz.
