I'm trying to overclock my 9800 pro, weird thing is...

My 9600's core can go much much higher than my 9800. Is there something I have to unlock on my 9800 card or what? It only goes to 400 max core which I found to be kind of odd. Thanks in advance.

you had a 9600XT or which 9600 card?

Due to the makeup of the 9600 vs 9800 cores.. the the fact that the 9600 has less pipes and other specific hardware... less for things to go wrong with the 9600.... the 9800 pro is pretty well loaded with everything... more to go wrong... not as much "mhz" needed to produce more preformance... 400mhz on the core is not to terrible at all....25mhz isn't bad...

but he should be able to go higher than that, unless heat is a factor. those cards run hot with that cheap hsf ATI put on there cards.

9600'S ARE BULT ON DIFFRENT CHIPS, 9600XT'S ARE BUILT DIFFRENT PLUS UNDER THE SPECAL LOW-K FAB THATS 13NM (SMALLER) PUT OUT LESS HEAT AND USES LESS POWER

hey uh Neon...er...using all caps was alittle much.

Yeah anywa its probably a heat problem mate. On my 9800SE@XT) try replacing the thermal pad on the HSF with arctic silver. Thats what I did first and it did wonders. Igot up to 411 after that. Nothing to scoff at, thats for sure. Then I modded an AMD heatsink for the job because it hurt my finger to touch the back of the GPU on the ATI card. I put that on and its cold to the touch. This allowed ALOT more overclocking. I would like to mention though that the heatsink gets mighty hot. If you have RAM sinks...er...this actually limited my memory overclocking. I cant get my memory much past 705mhz now because the RAM sinks that share the same airflow as the heatsink get mighty hot from all that hot air blowing off the heatsink. Just beware of that if you want an AMD mod.

i was just thinking of a little experiment im going to do, i got a 9800pro with ATI silencer 1. + seperate memesinks installed. and it overclocks to max of 440/370 gpu/mem. i used the silicone paste that came with the silencer.
im going to get some as5 real soon to oc my p4 2.4c , i will try and replace the silicone paste on the vga silencer with some as5 , i wonder if it will give me any better overclocking rates on the 9800pro.
what do ya think? i remember arcitc cooling saying explicitly that the stck thermal paste that cpomes with the silencer is optimum for it.

cheers, lz.

I've seen very few times when AS5 is not the optimum. Even on my computer, I used as3 and it got great results. MUCH better than with silicone. I have heard that with large dies(this is not an issue on ATI cards) like P4s or A64(okay not large dies but large spreaders) it is more effective or has almost no difference if you use silicone grease. The nice thing about the silicone is that its better if you have a really rough messed up heatsink because it seeps into the cracks faster and better than AS. AS is still the best heat transfer though, so if you have a nice fairly smooth heatsink, its all good (if you dont, PLEASE lap it)

I wouldnt know. Look at the heatsink. touch it. does it feel smooth? Then yeah probably. I havent encountered many heatsinks that wouldnt be very good for AS5 and the ones that I HAVE encountered had a long meeting with Mr sandpaper. Now they have nice mirror finishes. You dont have to go to the extreme of a mirror finish unless you really want to. It makes a difference but its generally not worth it(though thats just my opinion)

Anyway the heatsink is probably fine. Seriously if it looks smooth you're good. if it is rough then I would do something about that.

About the mem..I added a case fan in the spare hdd bay towards the middle of the case..Took a bit of 'creative' modding with the junk onhand, but it REALLY helped the mem sinks stay cooler. I only gained about 10mhz or so, but that's a nice increase for a cheap fan. I have two fans (amongst others) in this case close to each other, one pulling air from the front grill into the middle of the case, and the second pulling some of that air over the front and back of the card/silencer. That also serves to pull some cool air back near the cpu and out that rear fan..Lowered the case temp a bit as a bonus.. It's not a really great case layout-wise, but it works.

I've been noticing that I've got a lot of heat transfer happening to the back panel of the case through the bracket of the artic's exhaust..The switch is pretty warm to touch, and the bracket itself is good enough for a grilled cheese, if it were bigger. Been wondering how I can help expel the heat more..I've been thinking about a mod with a small duct + case fan on the outside of the pci slots of the case right over the vent to pull more air out of and away from the artic enclosure itself. Next rainy day, perhaps.

yeah AS5 is definatly better but its thick and sometimes harder to use. I have AS3 and I figure why mess with success? if heat becomes an issue, I'll definatly switch. For now my temps rarely get up to 38C
