Overclock that Barton 2500+ as close to the 3200+ level as it can get. It's not really worthwile to buy any AthlonXP more expensive than a Barton 2500+ anyway. Then save up for an Athlon64 next year or so, as it will still be the thing to get by then.

I would say the same. Most 2500+ can get 3200+ speeds easily. And it's not a big upgrade. Better wait and buy a A64 later.

Well getting close is not an issue...

I'd been running it at 2800+ (12.5x166@1.65v) and my previous monbo wouldn't do 200 fsb , i've got a much newer mother board now and can o/c alot better..

As I type this it's doing 3200+ (11x200@1.75) fine and it appears stable just ran the hl2 cs sourse bechmark no gains (smacks the person that said it cpu dependant becouse it is not!) my pc mark 2002 scores are like 6500 as to prevously sub 5500....

But untill i update my ram i'm running a stick of 512, kingston, cas 2.5, timeings 3-3-7 pc 2700 (stock) that of course hurt my scores

I originally bought the cpu, and slk 800U cooler with intent to o/c it to 3200+ but over time my willing ness to over clock has easied. I feel more confortable with smaller o/c's

1.83@2.2ghz 370mhz is a sizeable o/c compaired to what i've done in the past.... am I crazy to worry?

I think it's much cheaper just to o/c but if i can get a good price for this chip I can buy 3200+'s for alot less then you'd think ($108) then o/c it to 3200+/2.4 ghz ... I won't be upgrading to high amd 64 or a high end p4 till some time Q1-Q2 2005 so this has to last me....

Considering when i get my new ram i'm likely to have my x800xt PE in hand I wanna make sure i'm getting the full effect

You have a really good cooler and didn't have to bump the voltage too much, so it's safe. I'm also more for "reasonable" overclocking nowadays, and stability is always king. After getting that extra RAM it should be a nice enough system for gaming well into 2005.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-835&depa=0
for now... and another stick later

it stupid to run pc 2700 when i can use 3200 and the timeing on this ram i have now insnt the best either, not to mention it best to sync the buss and memory speed...

What about the best option: Sell your 2500+ and get a mobile.

There is absolutely no point in selling your CPU to get another 32 bit barton processor neon. granted you might get slightly higher overclocks or a few mhz more top figures but the gains will be minimum. If you game a lot which I know you do, the GFX is most important. Its best keeping your money until you can afford the 64 bit changeover. thats my view on it anyway then when the 64 bit windows hits the shelves, put that money you saved with the money you will get from selling your current hardware and make the switch.

sighs. is this really worth posting?. I could hit you with a few performance links from my extreme edition system but I wouldnt want to embarass you

It still amazes me people hate one maker or another, when we are right now in one of the best situations for buyers ive ever seen, we have a wealth of CPUs from both makers which are incredible performers.

Went from a 2400XP (266fsb) to a 3200XP barton (400fsb), although it made my rig somewhat faster, it doesn't really have shown that much effect..
Today I got a 9800Pro to replace the 9700(non pro) now that shows
So keep your 2500 for awhile until you can do the 64bit step i'd say
and extra Ram is alway's nice, although you could keep the money safe somewhere and wait until the 64bit boards with DDR2 and buy that DD2Ram would be an option IMM
