New to overclocking help me :D!

I'm going to be buying the GA-8S655FX-L

To go with my p4 2.4b processor. I heard the 2.4b is a good OC'r and that board is really good for it also. What fan should I get to keep the cpu extra cool and what is a good temperature for that processor. Any extra tips would be mucho appreciated.

dont do it make sure your know what your doing to i overclocked my cpu my first time and had a overclock failed i would advise you to stay away from ocing the cpu

yeah im actually very nervous about OC'n for the first time but I gotta start somewhere. I've been reading articles on how-to overclock and what steps to take to prevent a disaster. I'm really gonna take it safe because I want to get over 3.0 and I heard it can be done easily with the 2.4b

you know the first time i overclocked i got a overclock failed i advise you not to do it unless you think your on the ethuist level i mean its scairey

i've had oc'es fail. just pop the CMOS chip and reset ur BIOS and ur back. u can hit 3.1 for sure. just make sure ur using a good cooler with alot of fans. use a thermalright heatsink. that will get u where u want to go.

make sure to get some Arctic Silver 3, 5, or Ceramique for it. Dont get ANY OTHER THERMAL COMPOUND! lol seriously just stick with Arctic Silver.

anyway OCing can be fun and very rewarding. Just be careful with voltage. Read up on SNDS (Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome). Avoid it(its easy to do) and you'll be fine. Dont be scared at all. Its POSSIBLE to destroy your processor but VERY unlikely(its more likely that a year or 2 down the line you'll kill off a processor that otherwise would have lasted 4 years or something) all you need to know is where the battery on the mobo is and where the CMOS jumper is and you'll be FINE!

im not an enthusiast. I am a poor college kid that likes his hardware to last. on that note I dont want to replace my hardware in a year because its not fast enough, so I figure out the max overclock while its still stable, note it, and then go to stock until something is laggy and too slow. Then I OC(hasnt happened yet for me).

the guy doesnt need to be an enthusiast. Just aware of the POSSIBLE(but not terribly likely) problems he can have and what to do about it.

btw let me reiterate: BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE VCORE!!!

Bit of a change, after looking closer and my proc it turns out i have a 2.4A northwood. I looked around and the avrg. speed of the processor overclock is 2.7~ so im gonna shoot for around that.

but be very very very careful my thought on this is that you should overclock your old cpu if you have one and learn that way you know so its not a 400 dollar cpu i know so

what'd you do to your $500 cpu?
I had a 2.4b, i was able to reach 3.3 for a high, my mobo would not support higher because of no agp lock. I am pretty sure you could pull 2.7 easily

hey smokey, thanks for being concerned for the safety of my cpu/wallet. But i've read a ton of articles on OC'n and read every guide I could and read as many forums posts as possible. Im gonna be extremely careful. This will be my first overclock true, but I gotta start somewhere and this is a good chance, when my new mobo/heatsyn/ram get here im gonna take every precaution. And you know if I mess it up...it'll be a good lesson

it failed? Are you sure that you dont just need to use the CMOS CLEAR jumper? Seriously its REALLY REALLY hard to fry a CPU these days. If it overheats, your mobo will most likely shut down. if it becomes unstable, your OS will shut down. I mean seriously its REALLY REALLY hard to HARM the hardware. If you do extended overclocking then things can go bad that way but overclocking in a day...yeah that really shouldnt harm anything.

ouch. yeah i have a friend who basically got a budget for his rig...had me find the cheapest parts possible so we kept an A64 system at slightly over $500 (and we didnt get crap parts either. the geforce4 is bad but whatever all he does is play Diablo 2 right now) and it was all good...until unfortunatly somehow his order for the PSU got cancled and hes so itchy to get going that he spent $50 on a crap PSU at bestbuy(same one he was spending $15 on newegg)

OK! I got my mobo/case and their running beautifully. I didn't recieve my new HS yet so I just tried a lil overclock. I went from 2.4 to 2.619, cpu temp was 38 idle 42 load, it went to 38 idle and 43 load. Once i get my HS i'm gonna push it to 2.8 and see what happens

cuz intel isn't very good at that, i say go with the amd 2500 or something and oc that.
Get a ABit OR mSI.
MSI overclocking motherboard works nicely.

I just got my 2800+ up to 2.35ghz. I know for a fact that it'll run at 2.6 but I'm trying to see how high it'll go with absolutely no extra vcore

All I do is play games, and so far this new mobo is incredible and everything is running great. I was gonna go AMD but the problem was I already had the p4 2.4 proc and didnt have the money to get a new mobo and proc, so i just got the mobo and oc'd the processor a little bit, more to come with the heat sync

I would say this is a good fan but please make shaw that u have the room in your case lol as its a big f**ker lol
