WOW! Only a 100mhz OC and such a huge difference!

Hey I got an Athlon XP 2800+ (2.08ghz) and I OCed it to about 2.19ghz. I have to say, its such a huge difference!!! I mean everything seems more responsive...those few games that have those short seconds of lag when swapping textures...yeah those lag seconds are either gone or so slight as to be almost unnoticable. Its crazy! I didnt think such a small OC could make such a difference.

Now I wanna do more

see before, i just OCed to see how fast this thing could get but I always thought "meh I dont need the power, its strong enough already!".

then came doom3.

even farcry goes with no lip on my comp but Doom3 was the punk.

that and I multitask. 2 monitors makes a big difference in how much you can do at once.

anyway sorry just my pointless wonderment at how cool OCing is.

FSB increase or just mutplier?... a FSB increase will make a world of difference were as a mutliplier change doesn't do much....

my multi is locked both ways. I can only change FSB.

I was hoping to get it so that I would have 200mhz fsb with a 10.5 multi or something so that it would be the same speed as stock except with a higher FSB, but i havent tried any of the tricks to unlock my proc. I'm alittle bit scared to do it too.

maybe you should go and buy mobile barton on new egg or similar, you get an unlocked CPU which will probably be willing to go 2.5ghz, I currently have one that goes 2.8ghz, and all barton-M's I saw went on 2.4ghz without much hassle

mine goes alittle past 2.5ghz already. I think the Ram is holding it up though so im thinking of loosening the timings later.

not sure yet though.

problem is that I have to jack up the voltage for it and i feel like its alittle dangerous to have 1.75v. I dunno i just am scared that I'll burn the chip out too fast.

1.75v is excelent voltages if you're at 2.5Ghz. I wouldn't worry about voltages until i reach 1.85v on Athlon XPs. what is the mult on that 2800 of yours, and what kind (brand/specs) of memory do you have? if you have DDR 400 and you're at 2.5Ghz, getting DDR 433 or higher will definetly boost your speeds up by alot cuz you'll have more headroom to overclock.

just remember that w/higher overclocks, come higher voltages, so you'll need some excelent cooling for that 2800.

hahahah dont worry about cooling. I have an SLK with a crap fan but the temps have NEVER gone past 40C. I rarely see them actually GET to 40C.

I have 2x256mb of Geil PC 3200 RAM (stock timings 2-3-3-5 but im using 2-2-2-11)

Actually I was trying it again and I get just shy of 2.5ghz with 1.75v. I need 1.85v to exceed that 2.5ghz range. Once I get to 2.6 it either wont boot, or nothing in windows will work.

btw the mutly is x12.5 Its superlocked as far as I can tell.

how old is your 2800? if it's like 2yrs. old (which it probably isn't from what you're saying), then the mult. is unlocked. but if it's like 8months old or so, then you can't unlock it for anything. As far as memory goes, even if you get more DDR400 RAM, get some that has more agressive timings like corsair XMS XL series w/timings set at 2-2-2-5 stock. You'll notice a big difference from your ram at 2-3-3-5 (your settings 2-2-2-11). it'll be mighty expensive, but the performance would be worth it

. Or get DDR433 memory, and then you'll be able to hit 2.6Ghz easy cuz your memory wouldn't be holding you back anymore.

BTW, i forgot to ask, what do you have your FSB set at right now?

@geminiwave: If you have an nf2 mobo and Dual channel enabled, lower latencies won't give you much more speed since nf2 mem. controler is made that way that it is fast allready and acting like you have low latencies. If you have VIA chipset, than you will see the diference and you will have to try hard to get memory bandwith of nf2 DC setups...

what mobo do you have ? most nf2 mobos are willing to go some 230fsb, past that you must have a realy good mobo, for example one out of ten abit nf7 mobos will go over 230fsb (and be stable enough to load windows) without volt mods etc.

I have an A7N8X2.0

Maximum vCore is 1.85

The best I've gotten it at us about 205mhz. Its possible that the ram is holding me up at that point. I guess I'll loosen the timings and see what transpires. thanks guys

what is the speed on your CPU @ 200FSB? i ask cuz 1.95v and it's pretty much overkill @ 200FSB.

try 2.5-3-3-8 and see what that gets you.

Very few CPU's (xp's and bartons) are willing to go to that freq. let alone be stable to run :burn: So relax, make it stable on that freq. or better yet on 200fsb just to be safe and you are ok

i wouldn't recomend 3rd party software to help in overclocking. i've used 3rd party software back in my noob days of OCing, and all it did was OC my CPU like 15Mhz, and raise my voltages alot. The best way to go at OCing your CPU is through the BIOS. Also check for the newest available BIOS update for your board if you don't already have it. New BIOSes sometimes make your board more stable at higher speeds, or give you new featuers like higher voltages.
