Overclocking my notebook
I have the dell inspiron 8500
2.6ghz 512ddr ram geforce4 4200 go 64mb How safe would it be to overclock it. I have a fan controller and temperature monitors for my cpu, gpu, ram, and hd. I keep it running cool now the cpu around 125-135 if you can call that cool. How hard would it be also. Would o/c'ing the gpu have much effect. I have it running at 196mhz core and 390mhz memory. This would be much easier to o/c than the cpu but how safe and stable would it be and how far could i go? thanks for the help. |

Also any ideas for cooling besides putting it in a fridge?

I like the fridge idea
... Around 125-135... thats like ~55 C... eh, a little hot I think.

Mmm laptops usually aren't very good in o'clocking, mostly due to the temps idd.
Personally i wouldn't do it, your temps are allready a bit high and you're gonna void your warranty by doing it.

When i play games the cpu and gpu usually go up to somewhere around 150F. right now not doing anything just surfing the web its running at 115-120F. Safe if i can keep it cool by running the fans on high at a lower temp what would be a good target cpu number? Would 3ghz be too high?
Ive thought about custom making a cooling system for it by taking those personal cool things you put around your neck and fabing them into a case below the notebook.

yeah you are running pretty warm already, laptops run warm anyways, but w/ extra heat and how everything is compact, you may also hurt other components when getting extremely hot

Personally I wouldnt touch a laptop for overclocking. They are generally made with quite tight thermal dynamics, one hell of a risk if something goes pear shaped. i like the fact my dothan sits at 33-38c and its doing everything I need (then again im not gaming on it).

I have a Gateway 600S with the Mobility9000 on it and I can overclock it from 250/200 up to 275/230 with no artifacts of any kind in the middle of summer with no air-conditioning.
I tested it out by running loops of different demos and benchmarks and it works perfectly ![]() It all depends on what type of cooling it has and what else is going on. I also modded the cooling system on the P4 a little bit as well though so that might have a little to do with it since the CPU isnt making the temps sky high |
