I got my FX-55!

Well it finally showed up. AMD sent me the cpu in a little black plastic jewel case, and the heatsink seperate. It is not one of the new copper HSF's with the heatpipes. They said they cant get thier hands on any PIB's so they put this one together I use water anyway but it would be nice to have that HSF. So here are some pics and you should see some benches tonight. Here are some pics. SIK.

Glad to hear it's back on line Sik, I've just placed pre order(s) for my next victim and hopefully one of the suppliers has said they'll have stock in the next two weeks (yeah right).

Let us know how you get on, I can push 2.9Ghz in multiple ways but no more than that, more tweaking needed (but I'll lay off volt modding the mainboard Vcore ).

Look forward to seeing those benchies.

Zardon, so if I have a week 35 chip do you think it is an engineering sample? How do they differ?

An engineering sample basically means the processor is unlocked or semi unlocked. 14-18x for example.

The FX55 is unlocked by default which is excellent so there are no internal or reviewer "engineering samples". Intel always lock their cpus, so a person buying an extreme edition would be locked to one setting such as 14x200 (then overclocking on FSB such as 14x250 etc), whereas the ES's (engineering sample) processors have a certain range of multis available.

for example, this engineering sample above is unlocked from 12-17), meaning you can crank the memory scores if you have the right ram = ive it lowered to 14x262 in this shot. you can also see the "ES" in the chip idenfication. they are RARE (as they arent sold by intel to the public), worth some money too.

Damn, so are you allowed to sell those? Intel wouldn't allow it though.. Damn, Zardon, I'll say it again.. You are ONE LUCKY man...

Well they havent said im not to sell them, but its a gentlemans agreement and I do spend a lot of time testing for intel and we need the rigs for the reviews - especially when we need to test some high spec ram and find the limits, its hard with a standard processor to find ram-fsb limitations on a set hardlocked multi unless you are on prom or mach phase which isnt practical for reviewing.

i think the EE's should all be unlocked just like the FX series is unlocked. those are aimed toward gamers and overclockers. so why not unlock the EEs

Zardon - I know that the EE's are the same as the Xeons, without the multi CPU compaitbility...since ES chips are unlocked...do yyou think it woudl be feasible to run dual EE's in a server board? (just a thought)

Gallatin core yep.

EDIT:

erm, you just stated EEs arent dual+ compatible then proceed to ask me if they would work in a dual server board. Do you mean because they are semi unlocked as I mentioned?

No, they wouldnt - that "unlocking" isnt making it a dual + capable XEON.
