Memory at 1:1
I have a 533 FSB 2.4b P4 chip and PC2700 ram currently. My question is should I be able to run this at a 1:1 ratio?? I guess I would have to keep bumping up my FSB till I got to the correct level for it to be at 533? Gah, I don't know, can someone please explain this to me??

For 1:1 on a 533 (133x4), you would technically be running DDR266. 533=266x2
According to your sig, you are running at 667 (166x4) FSB. That puts you at 1:1 at DDR333. 667=333x2 |

![]() I kind of get that...but it is a little vague for me to completely grasp. So my ram is actually running at PC3200 (DDR 333) at the moment? So to get true 1:1 I would have to be running with it locked at 266 in my bios instead of locked at 333 which it is now, or go out and buy true DDR 333 sticks? When I CPU-Z it says that I am running at 4:5 currently.

not quite. DDR400 is PC3200. You should get DDR400 if you ever upgrade to a 800FSB cpu.
are you overclocking or not? please check your sig. if you are running the CPU at 533 (133x4) and you are running the ram at 333 (166x2), then you are running at 4:5. 133/166=4/5 |

yep. it might be over your head, but you have a cpu with the old "top dog" fsb. when 533 first came out, it was running an a granite bay board. The intent was to have 533FSB with DDR266 (PC2100) in dual channel. Now with the canterwood and springdale boards, the intent is to run 800FSB with DDR400.

Ok, I am planning on getting a 3.2c in the coming week or two. And I am running at the moment at 2970 mhz(165 FSB set in bios). My memory is running at 206 mhz at 4:5 FSB RAM according to CPU-Z. This might be over my head at the moment but I am trying to figure it out. I know my CPU is the older 2.4b I had to get it because my old P4S8X was limited to a 533 max FSB. I bought this P4C800-E dlx because I was planning at the time to buy a P4"c" cpu just after I got it, but I lost my job yada yada yada. So now I am trying to get back into the game and trying to get a grasp on the whole FSB memory timing mess.

I have allowed my memory to run at the "auto" setting in the bios and it is at a 1:1 ratio atm. So my memory is running along with my FSB at 165mhz. I think I am starting to get it....

you might be able to run DDR400 at 533 if your lucky, if you think about it thats 133mhz DDR difference, so at normal speeds thats 66mhz, its a bit of a gap but you might manage it. But with your Current PC2700 (DDR333) you will have more chance of getting struck by lightning!
look at getting some memory like this http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...146-947&depa=1 PC4200 memory runs at 533mhz

I did some tweaking of my bios and timings last night. Now I have my system running at the 1:1 ratio at 185 FSB @ 1.6v with my ram at 2.5/2/2/5. I think I hit the wall with my processor at this speed because I was able to run the ram up to about 210 at the 4:5 ratio. I am looking to try and get my new processor sometime next week. I will just have to deal with this ram for awhile after I get the processor, but hopefully not more than a couple of weeks...
Overall I am happy with the increase in performance I got last night with my adjustments and I am going to work on polishing up my heatsink this week to shave off a couple of degrees.

With a pentium system the way it was explained to me is that it doesnt matter if your memory and FSB are at 1:1, but it does make a bigger difference w/ an AMD system...Is this correct?

Running the cpu and memory in sync is generally better, but the only way to know for sure is to benchmark it.

My benchmark since last night has put me into 3rd overall place @ Futuremark in 3Dmark03 with a 9700pro (not much of a number anymore but hey, it's all I got). I got my Arctic Cooler today, going to do some lapping work on it and then slap it on and see if I can crank up the speed on the 9700 some more. The first place guy has his set around 394/342...I think my memory might get close, not too sure of that core clock though mine didn't like to run that hot when I tried it before.
