getting new ASUS A8N23-SLI board: advice on RAM
I am getting the new ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard. I will be using an AMD X2 4400+ Toledo, dual-core processor. I'm mounting the Thermalright XP-90 and high CFM fan to it. I will OC some, on air. Perhaps near 3Ghz....
This is my first dual-core processor and this board is supposd to be phenominal for OC'ing with its incremental adjustments of bus speed, PCIe speed and NB to SB freq. plus higher voltages and its new 8 phase power! So, my question to OCZ is: which memory will perform the best? I jumped the gun and ordered four sticks of 1Gb Platinum PC 3200.... Would this PC 4000 be better? With this board, adjustments can be made 1Mhz at a time! With so many adjustments on this board it seems the tighter timings of the PC3200 might be better because I could still keep the memory speed within its performance range and go up till I hit the wall on FSB and CPU speed. For this CPU and board combo, what seems right? I have mentioned before that I am not a "gamer", but I am sure hooked on Photoshop and digital photography. I want blazing performance for that. When I scan in huge files and manipulate them in PS I can waiting 10 minutes for a rotation (and my current PC is no slouch)! Any suggestions would be appreciated.... Thanks! |

Hi Scargo,
I think you will like that PC3200 Platinum just fine...You aren't going to notice much of a difference in PS with the ram running faster....you will get your performance out of having all that ram. Are you going to install x64 windows? or Media Center? Those are the only 2 OS that will recognize and use all 4GB in windows. XP SP2 will only use 2.75-3.2 and that is all that will show up in Windows. 3GHz from an X2 is not very realistic...unless I have missed some threads where they are running them that high...These are workstations CPU's not badazz OC'ers....I think you will be very happy with the choice though given you are going to be a true multi-tasker...I have heard glowing reports of these things running about 6 apps at a time without a hiccup. |

woot! my ocz platinum rev 2 came today! the only bad thing is I have to work till 9 so I won't get to try them out. As always newegg rocks. ordered on Tues, 3 day shipping and I got them today.
Also, the RAM doesn't have a version number on the left of the sticker so they should be TCCD chips! exactly what I wanted. Goodbye corsair.

The version number would be in the lower right hand corner of the sticker...very tiny just after the 2-2-2-5 timings.
Sorry if I had said left corner before. |

hmm... no I think the guy I talked to on the phone when I called said bottom left corner, which is where I looked.
I just dug out my RAM again and took a closer look. It appears that one stick doesn't have anything after the timings and the other has a very faint number. I can barely make out what appears to be a "v" and then there is a space where a number should be, but it looks like it finishes with an "0." so it looks kinda like this: "v '.0" I would assume that this means version 1.0. Since the other stick doesn't say anything is it safe to assume they are both version 1? OCZ wouldn't mix version 1 with version 1.1 would they? that would be two different chips. I sure hope these are the TCCD chips...

TCCD and TCC5 are the same IC...they just carry a different designation from Samsung....OCZ still bins the chips accordingly for the 3 different speed parts that we run this IC on. PC3200 Rev 2, PC4200 Plat, and PC4800 Plat.
I have a pair of Plat Rev 2 TCC5 sticks that run just fine at 290FSB at 2.5-3-3-7 timings. TCC5 or TCCD you have the same "chance" that the sticks will clock a lot higher than 200FSB. Not all TCC5 will and not all TCCD will ![]() But...lower right hand corner is where its at...and v1.0 is TCCD...no number at all should also be TCCD. |

I may not be able to do it but No_Style said:
" Over at XS forums, one dude has his 4400+ Toledo (2 x 1 MB L2 Cache) core from 2.2 GHz to 3.0 GHz with Stock Cooling. Although, his voltage is at 1.7 V which I don't recommend using. I believe the 4400+ hit around 2.6 GHz with safe voltages." I don't think 3GHz sounds reasonable on stock air cooling.....On the other hand, Hot Hardware got 3.12GHz from an Athlon 64 FX-53 on an open bench/air setup with this board. The 8 cycle voltage provided on the board is supposed to keep the CPU cooler. I do have Windows Pro X64, but haven't loaded it yet. I have lots of questions to get answered before I do that. Like, can I run two platforms (XP Pro and X64 Pro) at the same time (or simultaneosly and partitioned on the same PC)? I'm thinking I will run X64 stripped down for just CS2, scanning and printing until 64 bit becomes more mainstream. I understand drivers are still an issue.... |

yes you can run a dual boot. I ran both xp pro and x64 pro on my same drives... RAID appears to be one drive. just put them on different partitions. I am currently running 32bit windows because I couldn't get drivers I liked for my printer. I could get my printer to work via a workaround using drivers for a different printer but I lost all the added features of my HP photo printer. I couldn't choose the higher print qualities and couldn't access the card reader. Once there are drivers I'm hoping to switch over.

Hey rayder.. got my machine all rebuilt pretty much completely..
I've got the Gold OCZ 1gb kit (2-2-2-5).... but i'm not completely sure other then the first being CAS.... what the others are for sure as every bios seems to report a different set of letters (tras....trp....etc.) anyways... i'm going to go copy down the entire list of numbers that are currently set for the ram automatically... only thing i did change was the auto detected 2.5cas (which i would guess would be normal allowing one to start the computer JUST IN CASE cas2 didn't agree with something other then the ram)... anyways.. it's the only thing i set down to 2.. currently running VERY smoothly.... wish however that it was the 2gb platinum kit ![]() i'll report back hopefully shortly.. still installing various things.... (damn. 2mb cache ATA133 HD to a Sata 2 250gb 16mb Cache hd makes a MASSIVE difference)

Just set 1T/2T to 1T...you should be in the Blue slots for the ram and everything looks good.
CAS = 2 TRAS = 5 (if you want..shouldn't make any difference) Trcd = 2 Trp = 2 Trc = 11 Trfc = 14 Trtw or Trwt probably = 4 (3 here if it will boot that way) Twr = 3 1T/2T = 1T ![]()

Heres what didin't work in order: Firstly the system wouldn't post: I backed TRTW from 3 to 4.. now it'll post... However, windows won't load, and the bios won't load either: Backed Tras down from 5 to 6, now i have no problem posting at all, bios will load fine, windows will start to load then just reboot. Backed tras again back to the default of 7.... now windows loads fine and i haven't had a crash or hicup yet. Any suggestion? Or do you think i should be doing pretty damn good? Will a Trtw of 3 make a big difference? (i haven't attempted to try 3 since changing the tras back to 7)

I think you are doing pretty well...Trtw from 3 to 4 is not big deal...just a stability tweak

I think what Tulcakelume meant to say was "The ram should have no problems running @ 2-2-2-5 @ 1T."
That is, if you are only running two sticks of RAM. I assume you are...... If you have four sticks installed then you have to run 2T. |

have you ran memtest at all? sounds to me as if the ram isn't cutting it. My first set of Gold VX did the same thing, however new set runs flawlessly.

Its the board Judas,
Is this your first 2GB kit of ram or did you have 2GB before? Also the ram is not rated for 2-2-2-5 operation its 2-3-2-5...were you running 2-2-2? |

Oy, I guess I am all confused then
![]() Yes these should run 2-2-2 at 1T...although this series of Asus board is "famous" for 1T/2T issues at anything over 200FSB. Are things 100% ok at 1T and 200? |

OK, 1T work fairly good for the most part.. but Half Life 2 (CSS) Lineage2 and a few other games tend to crash shortly after starting up the game... probably 1 out of 10 restarts they run fine..
Running benchmarks like prime95 (4 instances) for a few hours doesn't seem to bother it.. no lockups.. these are all at STOCK speeds.. 200mhz fsb... defaults everything else...

have you run memtest? That should let you know if the problems are caused by the RAM or not...
yeah, I can't get my Asus board to run 1T at anything over 240... from what I've read though in real life performance is only about 1-3% less running at 2T and an increase in bandwith will more than make up for the loss of running at 2T.
