just load the chinese link and use your favourite translate tool; just make sure you have the chinese character set installed.

Better google translation

Seems interesting, but looks more of a speculation than even a proof of concept for now.

Quick, someone with a 6200 give it a try!!! It's just softmodding, if it doesn't work no harm done.

Yes,

I've read a lot about this, and its only the nv43 (a1, a2, a3... a4 is locked) core that can unlock the extra pipes. the nv44 which most of the 6200 are coming out with now are based on wont unlock. I just found a 6200 built on the same pcb as a 6600 (even has the extra molex connector) and it should be here in the next couple days. with a bios reflash, rivatuner, and a nice overclock... I think it should get close to the 6600GT.

I'll let ya'll know how well it goes.

I wouldn't hold out much hope to be completely honest... why would nVidia make 6200's out of working 6600's?

Then again ATI made X800GTO's out of working X850XT's....

Well,

I got my card in today. Taking a look at the PCB it is EXACTLY the same as the 6600gt PCB used for first gen PCI-E and AGP cards.

I did manage to flash the card to a full 6600. BUT! Depending on how lucky you are with your card, you'll get the extra 4 pipes. Mine shows a little artifacting when enabled. BUT!

With flashing the card to a 6600 I got a couple of features that make this $30 dollar card worth the purchase.

First I was able to activate the temp monitoring that was dormant in the old 6200 bios. (same NV43 chip, why wouldnt it have it?)

I was also able to get a SWEET! overclock out of the card! (More speed than a regular 6600!)

Im guessing the volt tables used in the 6600 bios are set a little higher... as such I was able to pull a 425/700 (core/mem) clock speed in this thing! Stock cooling (no ram sinks at all)

The card sits at a nice 50-65 temp and uses the 3D memory clock in the nvidia driver. (so your not running full speed when you dont need it!)

The card also uses the pure video features of its bigger brothers. (Which makes this a handy little card for all you PVR folks out there) Let me tell ya, I was shocked to see 10% cpu utl when I was playin HD video. But you have to BUY the nvidia pure video codec.

As I said before this card is based off of the 6600 and 6600gt PCB. as such, the volt mods for these cards are the same. This is my next step to see if I can pull more out of this card. More on that later.

so as it stands I am using the latest driver straight from nvidas site, simple bios flash, and coolbits to OC.

I get and average of 45fps in NFSU2 at 1280-1024 (native for my lcd) with all detail on (no aa or anio, which isnt needed any because this games looks great at this resolution anyway)

Guildwars never drops below 30fps in town! (which is amazing) and sits nice at around 55-60 out of town.

now considering my system: (NForce2 ultra 400 AN7, Athlon XP 2000+,only 266fsb, and 1GB corsair Value ram at 2.2.2.8.... This card can push!

At this point I am limited by my CPU. Any of you with a 333+ FSB should be able to FLY with this card.

More on this later.

Ok,

well a little more on the 6200

Well I took the time to take a peak under the hood

I found a extremly slopy job on the thermal goo aplication (or as my fience likes to call it... "processor cum"

The heat sink looked like it have been drug from here to Detroit behind a methanol drag rail.

And how in the name of all things holy do they expect that little fan to push any amount of air that would actually HELP cooling?

SO!

I lapped the heatsink down to 2000 grit wet/dry (the finest sand papper my roomate had ) and fixed a more (shall i say) "Manly" fan to the top.

all in all I was then able to keep the temp below 50 at idle. At load it wouldnt get above 61. (bare in mind this is at 400mhz core, 100mhz over stock)

So I then did what any resectable overclocker would do.....

thats right, Maxed the little guys out at 500! (actually 513 but it liked 500 more...)

at this speed it like to stay around 68c. not too shaby considering I couldnt get above 425 before. So now im running the core at GT speed.

Figured I would heat up the card, and see what type of overclock I could get on the memory at load temp (I do this because I want to keep the times clocked, and I feel its better to find you stable clock on a "hot card" so you dont burn up your ram)

I pulled the ram at 712! (remember this memory is only rated 3.6... roughly 275... ddr that would be 550... thats a 162mhx overclock!) I backed it down to 700 to be safe. Also this is without ram sinks. (my temp did hit 70c but didnt go over with the ram at this speed)

So now! I need to figure out some way to cool the ram, which is hard because (as most of you know) this is built on the first 6600 GT PCB. Now I dont know what Fruit Cake! thought up this card... but he should have his head checked. It is impossable to apply ram sinks to the front of the card because the heatsink covers a good 75% of the memory.

There are NO good aftermarket coolers for this style card, so this is going to be the hardest part of the mod. I need to find at way to up the cooling of the core, and leave enough room for ram sinks! Further more, there needs to be ample room for air flow for the memory.

If ya have any ideas, let me know.

Anyway, as she sits, I can play painkiller (old i know) at full eye candy, Ultra dynamic lighting, 1024-768, 4xAA at 55-60 FPS. (doesnt like 1280-1024 for some reason.

NFSU2 is a cake walk now at 1280-1024... and BHD looks great.

I do think my processor is holding me back at the higher resolutions though. (See my post in the cassified forums if you have a 333+fsb proc for sale)

So, things still to be done are as follows:

Heatsink idea leaving room for ramsinks.
Driver selection, to see if there is any more soft tweaks for speed.
Volt mod, for vCore and vMem.

And somewhere in the mix a new processor will be thrown in the mix.

Then we will see what this O'l tight budget AGP system can really do!

hmm. Ever thought of the old 9500 k7 cooler mod? dont know if it will fit your application but you can do the whole thing with a dremel.

Yeah,
I've thought of many different ways to fix a heatsink on there. What I think Im going to do anyway is build a water setup instead. It's time I give up the load whrrrr of my 8 case fans and move up in the world hehe.

Now my proc sits too hot anyway, so water cooling will do the trick.

Re: SoftMOD Nvidia 6200 to a 6600/GT

Well I had installed a cool heat system since my 6200 began running at 75 c without clockin.... (I brought it back to shop it is there at the moment) I built a small "platform" for my fan from BIONICLE!!!! yeah it is true. It looks like this
-Fan--
I
I
I
I-------

and I placed it just under the vga core (my card is upside down). I now it is stupid, but after I placed it it was running on 46 c.. you should give it a try by holding a fan in your hand under the core... and is is not important to di it with bionicle, just it was the thing I could do it with :P...

and can you send me how to do this 6200 to 6600 stuff cause all of the english version sux. my email is baritari@citromail.hu... if you want I can upload some pics of this but now I better play with some cool game :P
