newbie to OC'ing, any help anyone?

Well, my old P4 2.4 Ghz processor/AOPEN (don't even remember which model) finally crapped out on my for reasons unknown. So, I did myself a favor and bought an AMD 64 3000+ Socket 939 Winchester Core with an ASUS A8V Deluxe mobo. Now I'm interested in OC'ing my new processor. I know that over clocking involves raising the values of the FSB and multiplier, and I may need to raise my max vcore, but I've got a few questions...

What would be the safest way of doing this, instead of jumping from 1800 Mhz to lets say...2500 Mhz (I've heard it's possible to get it that high with stock cooling) would I be safer raising it about 100 Mhz at a time, rather than jumping 700 Mhz?

I'm pretty sure the default FSB is 200, so would I raise it like this:
Multiplier starts at 9, then change it to 10, then to 11, then to 12, then to 12.5? But leave the FSB at 200 at all times?

Also am I going to HAVE to change my voltage, or would I be able to leave it at the default?

What's considered a "safe" temperature, should I be under 50-55 degrees celcius even when gaming, or running other intensive applications?

Thanks for anyone who sat through and read all that!

Specs:
Enermax 550W PSU
AMD 64 3000+ Socket 939 Winchester Core
Asus A8V-Deluxe Via K8T800Pro Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA
1 Gb of Corsair PC3200 RAM
BFG Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB
80 GB Maxtor HD @ 7200 RPMs

well you cant raise the multiplier cause they lock them you have to bring up the internal clock of 200 so it will bring up your ram and fsb so 3200 ram wont get very far
you have to up the core voltage when the oc isnt stable or doesnt boot (lol had that happen ) you will have to up the ram voltage and loosen the timings to get any where with ddr400.
hope this helps

OK.No1.You're ASUS CD has a program called ASUS PC Probe and ASUS Update on it.Install them. They have lots of good info like CPU temps,MoBo temps, voltages and such. All in real time.ASUS Update lets you update you're BIOS from you're desktop. You can set it to update temps. and voltages every 2-7 seconds. It will set in you're taskbar until it's needed. If you go over whatever temp. you have set it at,say 55C,it will start beeping and the program will automatically come up on screen. Also install CPUZ{Not on the CD.Google it}.It has lots of good info. also. The A8V will let you OC 2 ways.Automatically and manually. In auto mode it will set voltages and clock speed's for you.All you do is set it to OC 3%,5%,8% or 10%.{All this is done from the BIOS}Or you can OC manually and adjust and tweak everything youreself.Hope this helps a bit...Read you're ASUS owners guide!!!It's full of good info.Have fun!P.S...Only the AMD FX CPU's will let you adjust the multiplyers.
