Cooling
Having a general discussion with my betrothed last night about keeping our computers cool, when she asked if I couldn't just drill a bunch of holes on the side of the case and srew a couple fans on.
I vaguely recall reading somewhere that this sort of thing is mainly counter-productive in your average case, although I can't quite recall why. Anyone enlighten me??? I have noticed that you can buy pre-modded cases off ebay and the like that have fans in the top and all over the damn place. Do they really make a difference to over all system temp? I have an Antec Sonata case with two 120mm system fans in it, but I am just about to stick in a LAN pci card, a new sound card, a wireless network card, and add a great big cooler to the graphics card to overclock a little, so it's gonna get a little crowded in there! (anyone who knows the Sonata knows that it has more cables and wires than throughout the whole of an average house as well) I've also just finished my mp3 server which is built around an Iwill XP4 evo, but testing it over the weekend, the 2G Celeron I put in was running over 60C after a mere hour or so without any workload at all hardly, although I'm hoping to bring that down a bit when the Artic silver I ordered arrives. Server uses an Akasa ak360, which alleges to cool up to 2.53G P4! Not if it's on 18 hours a day in a stuffy living room I'll bet. |

What kind of videocard cooler are you getting? Arctic Cooling has some good ones you may want to look into. Since you have a 120mm exhaust your temps are probably okay. Adding a 120mm top blowhole and/or 120mm side intake might drop your temps a little, but unless you're hardcore or yours temps are too high I wouldn't worry about it.

Depends, if you hadd a couple of intake at the side and front maybe the top and outtakes at the back then there is no reason for it not to help.

True, that is a large part of what moderators do.
